For over thirty years Prisons’ Week has prepared prayers to enable Christians

many people who are involved in caring for prisoners. Let us give thanks for
this annual resource. www.prisonweek.org
Tuesday 17th
47% of male and 50% of female prisoners ran away from home as
children – let us try to find long-term solutions and creative ways to
support those in unhappy and destructive homes.
Wednesday 18th
49% of male and 33% of female offenders in prisons today were expelled from
school and 49% of male and 71% of female offenders have no qualifications.
So let us give prisoners the skills they need while they are serving their
sentences to enable them to lead lives that will reach their full potential.
Thursday 19th
44% of male and 62% of female prisoners are diagnosed with three or
more types of mental disorder (four times higher than in the
community). So let us help to stop stigmatising mental health issues and
proactively support and sustain those needing specialist care.
Friday 20th
20% of male and 37% of female prisoners have attempted suicide. So let us
ask for God’s gentle mercy and love on all people trying to end their lives. May
these prisoners see Mothers’ Union volunteers as small rays of light in their
darkest hours.
Saturday 21st
We pray for all prison chaplains and staff, for the unseen work they offer
each day to those in their care. May Christ be among them always but
especially in the most challenging situations.
