Teacher/Learner Activity 1 – Peace for One Day and discussion:
• Watch the video of the song “Peace for One Day” and show to students in
class. Follow the lyrics for the song on Resource P, The Peace Collective
Brief. Examine the lyrics and discuss with the whole class.
• Ask the class the following questions.
• What was Dave and Jimmy’s purpose in writing the song?
• What did they hope to achieve?
• What is the message of the song?
• Which lines appealed to you?
Teacher/Learner Activity 2 – Peace One Day Brainstorm:
• Divide the class into groups of 4 to 6 students and ask them to select a scribe
to record ideas from their group brainstorm about the concept of “Peace
One Day” and what it means to them. The following words/phrases may
be useful to initiate the process: nonviolence, ceasefire, next generation,
building bridges, intercultural cooperation, global unity, resolution, we
the peoples, uniting nations, child soldier, peace to the planet, what
can I (we) do?
• At the end of the process, ask the scribe to report to the class. Suggest that
each group add new words and phrases to their own list so that all words
will be accessible to each group.
Reflection:
• Ask students to review the list of words and phrases generated by the class
and look for the words and phrases that appeal to them.
• Next, have them call out in turns those words/phrases selected. Write them
on the board.
• When students have shared their choices, ask them if there are any
combinations of the words written down that seem to have potential as lines
of lyrics.
• Ask students to begin building on ideas for a lyric based on the ideas from
the board.
• Hand out Resource X for the homework assignment.
