SCREEN TIME INCREASES NIGHTTIME URINATION A study published in Neurology and Urodynamics found that spending hours a day watching television and/ or videos increases the risk for nocturia, the need to urinate multiple times during the night. Participants aged 20 and older who

watched TV or videos five hours a day had a 48% higher risk of going to the bathroom two or more times a night compared with those who watched less than an hour a day.

TAI CHI LOWERS BLOOD PRESSURE BETTER THAN AEROBICS A study published in JAMA Network Open found that tai chi, a slow, gentle form of martial arts, was significantly more effective than aerobics at lowering blood pressure in adults with pre-hypertension. Participants were divided into groups that exercised for an hour four times a week for 12 months. One group performed aerobic exercises which included brisk walking, cycling, and jogging, while the other group performed tai chi. When the study ended, 21.8% of those practicing tai chi achieved normal blood pressure without medications compared to 15.6% of those in the aerobic group. “Tai chi provides a safe

and slow form of exercise that utilizes the parasympathetic nervous system — the relaxing side of the nervous system,” said David Brownstein, M.D., author of Dr. David Brownstein’s Natural Way to Health newsletter.

ED DRUGS MAY REDUCE ALZHEIMER’S RISK Medications used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED) may be linked to a lower risk of Alzheimer’s disease, says a study published in the journal Neurology. A University College London study of 269,725 men with no memory problems found that those who took ED drugs were 18% less likely to develop Alzheimer’s over a period of approximately five years than those who didn’t take the drugs. “While we cannot say based on our findings whether the drugs themselves were reducing people’s risk of Alzheimer’s disease, the results are encouraging and may point to a new way to reduce Alzheimer’s risk,” said study co-author Matthew Adesuyan.

SWITCHING ARMS IMPROVES VACCINE’S EFFECTIVENESS A study published in The Journal of Clinical Investigation measured the antibody response of 947 people who received two-dose vaccinations against COVID-19. Participants were randomized to get the second dose in either the same arm or the opposite arm as the first dose. In those who alternated arms,

an improved immune response — from a 1.3-fold up to a 4-fold increase — was evident three weeks after the second booster and persisted beyond 13 months. Researchers speculate that giving a shot in each arm activates new immune responses in different

lymph nodes in each arm. “By switching arms, you basically have memory formation in two locations instead of one,” said Marcel Curlin, M.D. “It’s probably not just limited to COVID vaccines,” he added.

VEGAN AND KETO DIETS QUICKLY BOOST IMMUNE SYSTEM People who switch to either a vegan or ketogenic (keto) diet see an improvement in their immune system within two weeks, according to researchers at the National Institutes of Health. The vegan diet, which excludes all animal products and is typically low in fat, prompted responses linked to innate immunity — the immunity you are born with — while keto, a low-carb, high-fat animal protein diet, resulted in changes to adaptive immunity — immunity acquired through exposures in daily life and vaccination.
