Cover Story

Greenbox Darlington

London at a journey time of just 2hrs 20 minutes). A £125m project led by a partnership of Tees Valley Combined Authority, Darlington Borough Council and Network Rail is currently underway to trans- form the capacity and quality of the rail station and its environs. This work will overhaul Darlington Station, and also includes a new multi-storey car park integrated within the bigger entrance area that is the station’s gateway to the town. Two new platforms will also be added to improve rail connections both within the Tees Valley and beyond.

Elsewhere on the park, new business incubation and growth space has been developed at Business Central and Innovation Central – just minutes from one another on the park – providing a choice of carefully designed coworking, office and lab space, all joined together by the support services today’s entrepreneurs need to innovate and thrive. Business Central has supported 200 businesses to start up and grow since opening in 2015 and the newly opened Innovation Central now offers further choice on the park. Both centres are run by the North East BIC on behalf of Darlington Borough Council.

Beyond Darlington Science Park, there are development opportuni- ties close by for larger scale facilities, particularly suited to logistics or manufacturing requirements.

Both Symmetry Park and Greenbox Darlington offer prominent loca- tions on the eastern side of the town, providing significant scope of opportunities for larger development needs, with excellent transport links via the regional motorway networks.

With over 400,000 sq.ft. of top-tier, sustainable, logistics and indus- trial space now available at Greenbox Darlington, the opportunities for establishing national facilities are significantly enhanced.

Using sustainable construction methods, innovative technologies, and sustainability initiatives, including the development of a green supply chain, the project is setting the standard for how the commer- cial real estate sector can help tackle the climate crisis and create a lasting positive impact.

The arrival of the Government’s economic campus is undoubt- edly a major boost for the town. More than 1,400 civil servants are expected to be based in the heart of the town centre, in a hub now officially named the Darlington Economic Campus. In total eight Government departments are now based in Darlington and offer not just a chance for local people to secure quality jobs, but also for businesses across the professional services sector locally to benefit.

The economic campus will bolster an already strong public sector presence in the town, with Student Finance England, Disclosure and Barring Service and Department for Education employing hundreds of people as well.

In the last few years, further regeneration investments have contin- ued to improve the town, helping Darlington to grow and succeed as a place. Just in time for the 200-year celebrations, Darlington has a brand-new visitor attraction that showcases the towns pioneering railway heritage and engages, connects and inspires the innovators of the future.

Following a £35m investment, Hopetown Darlington is now open, where visitors can explore the history and heritage of the railways in the town through digital, technological and immersive experi- ences. Hopetown Darlington really does celebrate the innovation and experimentation that put Darlington on the map

These developments all add to the viability and vibrancy of the town, and as you can see, Darlington really is thriving.

Darlington has everything a business needs to thrive and succeed. Maybe Darlington is the right place for you?
