The North East
One of the most significant developments since the formation of the North East Combined Authority is creation of the North East Investment Zone; a dedicated economic area where central and local government work with business and local partners to create the right conditions for investment and innovation.

Heads is creating a new Durham Innovation District, where businesses can access talent, research, networks, and resources. Set within a 62-hectare site, the new innovation district at Aykley Heads will provide around 400,000 sq ft of commercial floorspace, complete with hybrid planning consent. And in the city centre, the 450,000 sq ft Milburngate devel- opment provides another opportunity for businesses to access Grade A, flexible office space from 3,948 to 53,701 sq ft.
The North East Investment Zone is spread across four established economic sites in the region - Blyth Energy Central (Northumberland), River Tyne Economic Corridor (Newcastle, North Tyneside, and South Tyneside), NETPark (County Durham), and International Advanced Manufacturing Strategic Site (Sunderland and South Tyneside) – and supported by £160 million of investment over the next 10 years. The Investment Zone will build on the North East’s existing strengths in advanced manufacturing and green energy to support new investment, innovation, and growth in electric vehicle and battery manufacture, offshore and renewa- ble energy, and associated low-carbon man- ufacturing, materials, and research. For busi- nesses looking to invest or locate in the North East, the Investment Zone provides a host of direct benefits, including: tax reliefs, access to funding, and millions of pounds worth of investment by the North East Combined Authority in skills, infrastructure, and R&D.
In addition, businesses investing or locating on the North East Investment Zone will have access to the academic research capabilities of the region’s four universities, integration into the regional supply chain, a senior local planning contact, and tailored business sup- port and finance and funding guidance from the North East Growth Hub.
Given the scale of the opportunity in the region, the North East Combined Authority is currently developing an Investment Prospectus that will showcase the region’s key investment opportunities for investors and developers. It will present details on the opportunities to be found on key employment, mixed-use and housing sites across the North East, as well as in the Leamside Investment Corridor. The prospectus will be officially launched at UKREiiF - The UK’s Real Estate Investment & Infrastructure Forum, which starts on Tuesday 20 May.
