Yorkshire Counties Barnsley the place of possibilities
Written by Sir Steve Houghton CBE, Leader of Barnsley Council, and Matt O’Neill, Executive Director for Growth and Sustainability at Barnsley Council
The Glass Works
Barnsley is the place of possibilities and we’re open for business.
Our town has undergone a remarkable transformation in recent years, positioning itself as a vibrant and thriving destination in Yorkshire.
With significant investments in infrastruc- ture, retail, and cultural attractions, we’re rapidly becoming a focal point for business and leisure.
Sir Steve Houghton CBE A town centre fit for the future
The completion of The Glass Works, our flagship retail and leisure development across a 3.8-hectare site, has been a game- changer for the town centre.
Matt O’Neill 50
This £210 million investment has trans- formed Barnsley into a modern, dynamic destination, attracting significant footfall and boosting the local economy. Major operators like Cineworld, Nando’s and Next have established a strong presence, putting the site at 94% let.
The Glass Works also hosts a diverse range of multi-day and sin- gle-day events including food festivals, a live music festival, inter- national markets, Christmas activities, family-friendly activities and arts and culture performances helping the visitor numbers to grow year-on-year since opening.
It’s the jewel in the crown of our town centre, which had a footfall figure of 6,983,944 in 2023-24.
But we won’t rest on our laurels.
We’re developing a pioneering initiative called Health on the High Street that integrates health and wellbeing services within the town centre, promoting a healthier community and drawing an additional 100,000 visitors to the town centre per year.
Proof of concept has already succeeded at the Community Diagnostic Centre in The Glass Works, which provides vital testing and screen- ing services including ultrasound, X-ray, breast screening, phle- botomy and bone density scans, taking pressure away from our main hospital.
A larger, holistic hub will be located within the Alhambra Shopping Centre, in collaboration with Barnsley Hospital, Barnsley Premier Leisure, the South West Yorkshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust and the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority.
