Hellens Group set to begin work on Darlington garden village site
Burtree Garden Village
Work is set to commence on the Burtree Garden Village project following the signing of the Section 106 agreement. This marks a significant step forward for the development, which aims to bring new housing, employ- ment opportunities, and green space to Darlington over the next 20 years.
Burtree Garden Village will deliver 2,000 homes along with 200,000 square metres of employment space. The first phase includes 750 homes, a 20-acre public park, and a com- mitment to preserving green space. The pro- ject will also incorporate retail outlets, com- munity amenities, and sustainable transport links.
Homes England has committed £43 million to fund essential infrastructure, including highway improvements, sustainable trans- port, and green space. Darlington Borough Council has played a key role in facilitating the development, contributing land and providing strategic oversight.
Hellens Group, which has extensive expe- rience in regional development, views the project as a major opportunity to support housing and employment needs in Darlington.

Most recently, Hellens Group completed the redevelopment of the historic Houghton Colliery site into a £20 million retail park.
Located in Houghton-le-Spring, the project transformed a long-vacant brownfield site into a thriving commercial hub. Delivered in partnership with Robertson Construction North East, the development features a 45,000 sqft Tesco store, a 20,000 sqft B&M unit set to open soon, a petrol filling station, and a 300-bay car park.
With this latest project, Hellens Group contin- ues to demonstrate its commitment to creat- ing well-planned, integrated communities that support economic growth while prioritising green space and infrastructure investment.
