Retail staff endured tough conditions during the pandemic. Now, with the UK Real Living Wage
increasing, Becky Bargh asks, isn’t it time retail staff were given the investment they desire?

he Covid-19 pandemic has done more than shine a spotlight on the fragility of the world as we know it. Overlooked workforces have come to the fore – and none more so than retail staff. Hundreds of thousands of retail workers struggled on through enforced lockdowns, caused by the global pandemic, making a name for themselves as the ‘forgotten key workers’. Meanwhile, those that did not continue to work were thrown into disarray and fear for their jobs as many retailers shut up shop, in some cases forever,
putting thousands of people’s livelihoods in jeopardy.
A study by RetailTrust showed that staff were suffering their own mental health crisis as major outlets began to cut headcounts amid fear over weathering the storm of Covid-19.
A 2020 report by the north London, UK-based charity revealed a 164% surge in retail staff applying for mental health support, across all sectors, during the anxious months of lockdown. At the time of the survey’s publication, Adrian Massey, author of the report and Chief Medical
