HOW TO INTIMATE WASH
MAKE AN INTIMATE WASH
Ecooking explains what goes into a successful feminine hygiene product
Mike Hansen, Lab Manager and Product Developer, Ecooking First, let’s explore why feminine
hygiene is so important. Biologically, a woman’s intimate area has much lower pH levels than the rest of the body. As a result, this sensitive area of skin requires a cleanser that doesn’t aggravate mucous membranes or good bacteria.
Once the healthy balance is disrupted, irritation and infections can occur. This often happens when products with higher acidity levels are used instead of more targeted formulas, ie regular soaps, cleansers or shampoos.
This is the main reason why we wanted to create a delicate yet effective Intimate Wash for our customers. We want to help and educate women when it comes to female health. When formulating the Intimate Wash, we had a brainstorm to discuss what needs this sensitive cleanser should fulfill. We felt it was important to formulate a product that was gentle but maintained a healthy balance for the natural microbiota in this area.
Preventing moisture loss was also essential. As a result, we decided to include surfactants which wouldn’t irritate or dry out this delicate area of the skin. We chose two ingredients – disodium laureth sulfosuccinate (DLS) and coco-glucoside – due to their mild and natural, plant-based origins. DLS is excellent at lifting oils and dirt from the skin, allowing them to be easily rinsed away. It also creates a gentle foam while adding stability to the formula.
When cleansing any area of the skin, we always need to consider protecting it too. As a result,
we included the ingredients aloe vera extract, prebiotic inulin and the amino acid sodium PC. Both aloe vera extract and inulin are highly regarded for their ability to provide protection, which in turn prevents the skin from drying out and causing any sort of imbalance. Aloe vera is also known for its calming properties, which is perfect for a sensitive area like this, which can become easily irritated. Inulin plays two roles within the formula: it works like a magnet to water and attracts moisture. Secondly, the ingredient provides an ultra-thin layer on the skin, which in turn increases flexibility.

The amino acid complex effectively absorbs moisture to the skin. Last but not least, we included lactic acid in the formulation. This natural antimicrobial ingredient helps to maintain a healthy pH within the intimate area to increase skin homeostasis and prevent the growth of harmful bacteria. To sum up, our Intimate Wash was created for those want to live their life in balance
