Cosmetics Business investigates one of beauty’s last single-use skus: the sheet mask

any would say that K-beauty was responsible for the popularisation of sheet
masks in the cosmetics arena. But sheet masks have been adopted since the 1800s, although not in the conventional methods that we know today.
Slices of beef were thought to be one of the early ways of ‘sheet masking’, by which women would use these meaty methods to avoid ageing skin. Although this would doubtless fail modern regulations, the concept of using a thin layer of material on the face to achieve a desired beauty effect is no new phenomenon.
Modern day sheet masks are touted for their ability to deliver a quick burst of hydration, while their cocktail of ingredients improves skin’s texture. “Sheet masks enable active
ingredients to penetrate the skin better, so the efficacy is better. I’m always surprised by the clinical effectiveness studies carried out with masks,” comments Charles-Henri Morice, Head of Innovation at cosmetic products manufacturer Lessonia.

Is there such a thing as a sustainable single-use sheet mask?
The outbreak of Covid-19 added to sheet masks’ popularity. Locked-up consumers seeking self-care turned to sheet masks for a moment to relax and unwind during what has been an unprecedentedly intense period for consumers and companies worldwide. However, the ritual is in the firing line for its impact on the planet. “We don’t need them at all,” says Sian Sutherland, founder of activist organisation A Plastic Planet and co-founder of skin care labels Mio and Mama Mio Skincare.
“For that little short-term experience of applying a lovely, cool sheet mask to your face, look at the footprint that you have created,” she tells Cosmetics Business. “Sheet masks are a great example of the misuse of a permanent material.”
