DRAMA & COMEDY

much truth in those characters and in that dialogue,” he says. Certainly, I May Destroy You connected

with a far wider audience than Coel’s previous work, notably E4 series Chewing Gum. “People have related to it across all social

classes and all ages, because there’s truth in it, and because the story is well told, with characters that you have a lot of empathy for,” says Meyer. Coel played Arabella, a care-free, self-

assured Londoner with a burgeoning writing career and a wide group of friends who has to rebuild her life when she is spiked in a nightclub with a date rape drug. “Even though bad things happen to her

character, she is not a victim,” says Meyer. “It doesn’t define who she is. The characters aren’t miserable. There is humour and strength within the characters. “I know, some people find it a hard watch.

But despite its subject matter, it’s uplifting.” What did surprise Meyer is how many

people found the events within the series triggering, and who said something similar had happened to them. “The scale of that surprised me personally,” says Meyer. “I can’t speak for Michaela But I’ve been heartened and touched by the way it seems to have helped with the recognition of that kind of assault and story, and also that kind of carrying on in the face of it, rather than letting it define who you are.”

Team Effort Meyer says that Coel was extremely collaborative throughout production. “At the same time as rewriting bits of script,

reviewing rushes, wrangling whatever scenes were coming up with me, she was then going to have to go on set and act for a major part of the day.”

IT IS SO RELATABLE. THERE IS SO MUCH TRUTH IN THOSE CHARACTERS AND IN THAT DIALOGUE

“She was a real powerhouse of energy, but

combined that with collaboration, and with Sam [Miller], the director, and Simon [Maloney] the other producer, we did it as a team. And Roberto [Troni] and Phil [Clarke] from VAL, we were a team. We were pulling in the same

direction. We could all see the show in our heads, even though we hadn’t made it yet.” Asked whether the team had to fight

to ensure that the complexity of the script converted to the screen, Meyer says “we certainly had to make sure in the heat of battle, that we were being true to the vision that Michaela had while achieving it within the constraints of what you can do within a day’s filming. “But, pretty much, we did that. We were

aware that it was unusual, and had an unconventional form within it…but there wasn’t pressure to sanitise it at all. But we were aware that it was a very particular tone that we had to safeguard.”
