That Springwatch 2020 felt like “a wildlife show, not a pandemic show” was one of the team’s proudest achievements, according to the series’ Executive Producer Rosemary Edwards. Another is how the live OB had to be adapted, with a number of changes that ended up enhancing the end result. Typically, a Springwatch takes 12 to 18


months to plan, with infrastructure put in place around March each year – including the securing of hotel rooms near the location chosen to be the main focus for the team of around 120 staff (plus three presenters) involved on site in producing coverage of the annual three-week live event. But in March 2020 the country went into its

first lockdown. All plans had to be changed overnight. And that year’s Springwatch was


re-configured and re-planned in just three months ahead of going live on May 26 and running for three weeks. Working in the production team’s favour


was the fact that the show is shot outside and that as species and their seasonal behaviours tend to remain pretty constant, there is a focus each year on how best to evolve how stories are told that season.
