Sequins and glamour are key ingredients of Strictly Come Dancing’s unique and enduring primetime appeal. So, too, is high emotion – which for S18 was more to the fore than ever before, Executive Producer Sarah James readily admits. With work on each series typically beginning in February, it was clear almost from the outset that the experience of making Strictly 2020 would be … unique. They already had a number of celebrities in mind – typically the cast isn’t finalised until July, the first members of the creative team were starting to come on board, and ideas for the dance numbers were nascent. underway. “We all thought it won’t last for long, that


it will be fine by September as it was early days in pre-production and in a couple of months everything would be back to normal,” James admits. But then events forced them to think again. “We decided we’ve got to make it as it’s a big show, which means it’s a big chunk of work for lots of people. So, we began picking apart everything we do.”
