The Real Thing The characters that Coel created in I May Destroy You were complicated and conflicted, portrayed with all their strengths and weaknesses – making them seem believable, well-rounded people, capable of being funny, kind and loving, but equally capable of selfishness and self-absorption. While it took a long, hard look at some


uncomfortable topics like date rape, like life it was also very funny, flipping from darkness to comedy and back again. In the end, Coel’s story was not just


about rape, or consent, but about going forward and not looking back. Her scripts also explored hope, friendship, families and forgiveness, the power of creativity, and the human spirit.
