DAVID ATTENBOROUGH: A LIFE ON OUR PLANET NETFLIX SILVERBACK FILMS & WWF

RUNNERS-UP

Director Keith Scholey explains why David Attenborough’s first feature film hit a nerve with a public now waking up to the threat of climate change

Throughout his career, Sir David Attenborough has made hundreds of hours of television, yet A Life on Our Planet was his first feature film – and his most personal project to date. It was also one of his most impactful – a

powerful call for the world to take action to halt irreversible climate change. Coming from 95-year-old Attenborough,

it stood out. In his long career, Attenborough has visited every continent on the globe, documenting the living world. For years, he had kept away from

campaigning journalism. Recently, though, Attenborough has taken a stand. It began in 2017, with Blue Planet II’s focus on plastics, while 2019’s Climate Change – The Facts put global warming in a prime-time slot for the first time in years. David Attenborough: A Life On Our Planet,

however, took it to a new level Produced by leading wildlife filmmakers Silverback Films and global environmental

organization WWF, he documented his life in film-making, the destructive force of humans on the natural world, the urgency of the need for change in order to save the planet - and his vision for change.

Tellingly, the film was billed as

Attenborough’s witness statement to the natural world. It was released first in cinemas around the world in September 2020, and then launched globally on Netflix in October. A book, co-written with Silverback, and a high profile media and social media campaign, helped to raise the profile – and impact – of the film still further. Keith Scholey, co-founder of Silverback Films and joint director of David Attenborough:
