PRODUCTION COMPANY

focused on Premier League side Arsenal F.C. 72 Films is also exploring a move into the factual entertainment genre. “We’re trying to do factual entertainment in a ‘next level’ way,” says Glover. “Like in documentaries, there is a greater level of ambition and expectation in factual entertainment now.” What unites 72

Films in its programme making is its interest in human stories and the modern world. Many of its documentaries are about powerful people, like Donald Trump, Rupert Murdoch or the Assads.

He cites 72 Films’ 9/11: One Day in America, which has performed particularly well in the US. The seven hour series, all about one momentous day in history, was researched and produced over several years, and involved trawling through over 600 hours of footage. “We watched it all. If someone walks past

the camera, we pretty much know who they are. It’s that level of a deep dive. It’s now possible to make a series which is almost like a big novel, where you follow one person across all the hours of TV,” says Glover. “But unlike drama, it is all true. And often, the truth is stranger than fiction.” Glover puts the company’s success

down to trying to work with the best people, and giving them the space to create good programmes. “We are very much about the work. Our culture springs from lots of really cool, committed, intelligent people all working really hard. It’s as simple as that.”

OUR INTEREST IS IN REALLY HIGH END TELEVISION, AND THAT HAS COINCIDED WITH A REAL BOOM TIME IN THE GENRE

Among the projects coming up for

72 Films is a new series of observational documentary All or Nothing, this time

Such films, says Glover, are a reflection of the times we live in. “We’ve done a lot of programmes about Trump partly because he has been the story of the past few years.” His passion for documentaries clearly

shines through. Says Glover: “I love the fact that in documentaries, one gets to look into so many different worlds in one lifetime. I wouldn’t swap this for anything. Roger Federer just has to hit a ball. What’s really nice about being in documentaries is that you spend six months with astronauts, then a year with detectives, and then a year with pop stars, and then with prize winning scientists. It’s just endlessly and constantly fascinating.”
