difference of 136,600 tonnes or 4.1 per cent and was 299,300 tonnes or 9.5 per cent greater than the 10 year mean for the period. The year to date output was 394,200 tonnes or 3.9 per cent greater than its year earlier counterpart and 792,200 tonnes or 8.2 per cent above the 10 year average for the term. Total feed production during the third quarter of 2018 was made
up of: 47.8 per cent poultry feed, 30.3 per cent cattle and calf feed, 12.9 per cent pig feed, 4.2 per cent sheep feed, 3.7 per cent other feed and 1.2 per cent horse feed. Total feed production during the first nine months of 2018 was
made up of: 45.5 per cent poultry feed, 30.2 per cent cattle and calf feed, 12.8 per cent pig feed, 7.2 per cent sheep feed, 3.1 per cent other feed and 1.3 per cent horse feed. Cattle and calf feed breached the 1,000,000 tonnes mark for only
the second time on record during the third quarter of 2018. Beating the previous high of 1,015,000 tonnes amassed in 1995 by 26,000 tonnes, the 1,041,000 tonnes of output from the quarter under review stood 65,000 tonnes or 6.7 per cent above its year earlier tally and 110,100 tonnes or 11.8 per cent above its 10 year average. Production of cattle and calf feed during the first nine months of the calendar year reached 3,165,000 tonnes, 143,300 tonnes or 4.7 per cent greater than at the same point of 2017 and 235,900 tonnes or 8.1 per cent above the 10 year average for the first three quarters of the year. The only sector whose third quarter returns fell below those seen
a year earlier was pig feed. The 443,100 tonnes of output was 16,000 tonnes down on 2017’s Q3 production, a decrease of 3.5 per cent. 2018’s total was, however, 23,900 tonnes or 5.7 per cent higher than the 10 year average for the period. Thanks to a strong first quarter, the year to date total, at this juncture, is fractionally higher than its predecessor. At 1,340,600 tonnes of production, the total output throughout the first nine months of the year were 800 tonnes or 0.1 per cent more advanced that at this stage of 2017. The yearly total so far was also significantly above its 10 year average of 1,239,800 tonnes, being 100,800 tonnes or 8.1 per cent greater than the mean. Third quarter poultry feed production attained unrivalled levels in
2018, reaching 1,644,600 tonnes and surpassing the previous record, set a year earlier, by 28,000 tonnes or 1.7 per cent. Output was a further 103,800 tonnes or 6.7 per cent above the 10 year average for the quarter. A 96,400 tonnes or 2.1 per cent increase was seen in year to date poultry feed production, with total production at the end of September finishing at 4,773,700 tonnes, a record high for the timeframe that placed the total 300,300 tonnes or 6.7 per cent advanced of the 10 year mean. A colossal 143,500 tonnes of sheep feed was produced in Q3,
41,200 tonnes or 40.3 per cent more than in the same period of 2017. The second successive record high for the third quarter was a further 54,100 tonnes or 60.5 per cent ahead of the decade long average for the time span.101,100 tonnes more sheep feed was produced from January to September 2018 than in the year preceding it, a 15.6 per cent rise to 751,400 tonnes. Additionally, the 2018 total to date stood at 119.4 per cent of the 10 year average, a 121,800 tonne difference. 500 tonnes was all that separated third quarter horse feed from
the year previous equivalent. A 1.3 per cent increase brought the 2018 total to 40,600 tonnes which was, additionally, 1,300 tonnes or 3.3 per

cent greater than the 10 year average. The 138,600 tonnes of horse feed manufactured during the first nine months of 2018 was a more significant 6,900 tonnes or 5.2 per cent ahead of year earlier levels however; performance was not quite as strong when compared to the year to date 10 year average of 133,000 tonnes, with 2018 production a less substantial 5,600 tonnes or 4.2 per cent ahead. Other feed production during the third quarter of 2018 had risen
2,300 tonnes or 1.8 per cent from a year earlier with output amounting to 128,200 tonnes. Additionally, quarter three production was 4,500 tonnes or 3.6 per cent above the 10 year average for the timeframe. Despite a strong third quarter, other feed was the only feed production sector to fall below year earlier levels when year to date production quantities are compared. The 321,700 tonnes manufactured so far in 2018 is a significant 16,800 tonnes down on the quantity of feed produced at this point last year, a drop of 5.0 per cent. In contrast, 2018’s total amounted to 22,000 tonnes or 7.3 per cent more than the 10 year mean of the first nine months of the year. For a third successive time in 2018, quarterly feed production levels
and year to date quantities have been at record levels and this surely signifies that 2018 feed output is on course to be a fourth consecutive annual high. It is perhaps unsurprising that, given the drought conditions experienced in the summer, that the ruminant sectors far outstripped previous production levels and yet, despite a downturn in third quarter pig feed, the wider pattern was also one of growth. Poultry feed production was once again at unprecedented levels and both horse and other feed bettered their previous Q3 and with only other feed falling
