the subsequent milk production and weaning weight. Even though feed additives for piglets show varying results in trials, the large litter size in modern pig produc-tion, where sows typically nurse 14-15 piglets, requires that we offer piglets supplemental milk and dry feed to teach the piglets to eat dry feed before weaning. Feeding strategy at weaning, disinfection of the pen prior to transfer of pigs and overall hygiene in the pen, transfer strategy, health status and access to water are all factors that affect weaned piglets and that need to function optimum to successfully manage the termination of zinc oxide without an increase in antibiotic use.
