AIC CONFERENCE HEARS CALL FOR COLLABORATION AND
INNOVATION Collaboration and innovation emerged as key themes at the Agricultural Industries Confederat ion’s Agr ibusiness 2019 conference, held against the backdrop of hourly news on Brexit. Addressing the theme of ‘Creating a
resilient UK Agri-food supply chain’, key speakers, including NFU President Minette Batters and Sir Peter Kendall, talked of the need for collaborative work across the food and farming sectors. Sir Peter, in his role as a member of the Food and Drink Council, called
its way through Parliament, Mrs Batters said: “Nothing wrong with the Agricultural Bill – it’s the policy around it that will define the future of UK Agriculture.” During the conference delegates took
part in several polls. There was a degree of optimism about post-Brexit Britain with 50 percent agreeing that ‘Brexit will provide more opportunities than threats post Brexit for the agrisupply, farming and food supply chain’. However, more worryingly 65 per cent
disagreed with the statement ‘Farmers will be in a position to secure all their agrisupply inputs post 30 March 2019’, and 56% disagreed with the statement ‘Defra will secure a good deal for UK agriculture and the agrisupply industry post March 2019.’
ALLTECH CUTS THE RIBBON ON NEW U.K. OFFICE A newly built office in Stamford, Lincolnshire was opened by Dr. Mark Lyons, Alltech president and CEO, and Mrs. Deirdre Lyons, Alltech co-founder and director of corporate image and design, at an official ribbon-cutting ceremony on Thursday, Dec. 6, 2018.
ALGAE AND INSECT SECTORS CALL FOR A WIDE EU PROTEIN PLAN TARGETING “NEW” PROTEIN
SOURCES. In the wake of the ‘EU Plant Proteins’ report, the EU umbrella organisations for the algae (EABA) and insect production sectors (IPIFF) jointly called for a wide EU Action Plan to boost the development of ‘new’ proteins sources in Europe. On 22 November, the European
Commission adopted a report on the ‘Development of Plant Proteins in the European Union’. Intended to explore possible avenues in response to the Protein Deficit in Europe, this document was presented on the occasion of a high-level conference co- organised with the Austrian Presidency on 22 and 23 November. Reacting to the communication, the
IPIFF President Antoine Hubert stated: ‘as representative organisations for the algae and insect production sectors, we do welcome the European Commission plans to develop plant protein production in the EU. We do however believe that the EU institutions should look beyond vegetal or conventional protein sources, and notably explore possible synergies with ‘new’ proteins sources’. The EABA President, Vitor Verdelho
The 70,000-square-foot innovative design was initiated by Deirdre Lyons in late 2015 to
accommodate Alltech’s growth in an office-only site. It features an open reception area, five meeting rooms, including a purpose-built training room, offices and dedicated creative spaces. A building that cultivates collaboration was the vision for the new office. While the initial design work started three years ago, ground was broken on the new building in November of 2016. The office now reflects the nature of Alltech’s late founder, Dr. Pearse Lyons, with open spaces designed to nurture creativity and innovation. “Our new building, designed by Mrs. Lyons, brings together many of our Alltech teams
for greater collaboration and improved service to our customers in animal and crop nutrition,” said Alric Blake, chief operating officer of Alltech. “We look forward to welcoming customers, colleagues and friends, old and new, to Alltech Stamford.” In conjunction with the new building, manufacturing operations were relocated to a larger, more suitable site 12 miles outside of Stamford. Stamford has been home to Alltech’s U.K. offices since 1988. Today, the team includes
120 highly skilled specialists who work hand in hand with feed, farming and food businesses to achieve performance targets through nutritional innovation. In addition to serving as the primary base for Alltech’s chief operating officer and the global leaders of Alltech’s core animal nutrition platforms, Alltech Stamford is also home to Alltech’s U.K. team and Alltech E-CO2
, which provides
tools and services to improve the sustainability and efficiency of farming operations. “Dr. Pearse Lyons established a culture of creativity and innovation at Alltech,” said Blake.
“Our new U.K. office reflects that spirit as the company continues to grow and carry the mission forward.”
Vieira also pleaded for the establishment of an ‘inclusive’ EU strategy: ‘complementary sources of protein sources such as algae & insects can play a decisive role to reduce nutrient deficiencies in animal feed formula or to complement consumers’ diets’. ‘Yet, in view of their potential to be fully exploited, EU Policy makers should develop a wide EU Action Plan which would also comprise appropriate measures targeting at those sectors’, added the EABA Chair. Against this backdrop, the organisations decided to join forces and agreed on a set of concrete proposals, including the establishment of appropriate EU funding measures and cross sectorial collaborations through EU Research and Development projects, tenders targeted at EU industry associations. ‘Moreover, we are pleading for the
launch of EU information campaigns to raise awareness on the existence and advantages of new protein sources, while promoting the benefits of eating a variety of protein sources for EU consumers’ added the IPIFF Chair.
