Feed Production Update

By Ryan Mounsey

GREAT BRITAIN October Production Overview Total production of compounds, blends and concentrates, including integrated poultry units, during October 2018 amounted to 1,120,100 tonnes, the highest total recorded in the month since 1996. 2018’s output was 22,700 tonnes or 2.1 per cent greater than production in the same month a year earlier and additionally, output rates exceeded the 10 year average for the period by 81,100 tonnes or 7.8 per cent. Total feed production during the month of October 2018 was made

up of: 44.8 per cent poultry feed, 32.6 per cent cattle and calf feed, 13.7 per cent pig feed, 3.9 per cent sheep feed, 3.9 per cent other feed and 1.3 per cent horse feed. In a pattern that was also displayed in the preceding month, October

cattle and calf feed output only fell below the levels that had been amassed in 1995. At 365,200 tonnes, production exceeded year earlier levels by 7,100 tonnes or 2.0 per cent and the 10 year average for the month under review was surpassed by 22,700 tonnes or 6.7 per cent. Blends for dairy cows were one of only two components of cattle

feed to fall below year earlier outputs. The 70,300 tonnes produced in October 2018 was 3,600 tonnes lower than the 73,900 tonnes amassed in the same month of 2017, a 4.9 per cent decline. In addition, total calf feed was 2,500 tonnes or 14.0 per cent lower than year earlier levels, with a 2018 output of 15,300 tonnes. Compounds for dairy cows started the fourth quarter strongly with 178,000 tonnes of production in October, 3,800 tonnes or 2.2 per cent greater than the output from the same period of 2017. Both all other cattle compounds and all other cattle blends exceeded year earlier levels, doing so by 5,200 tonnes or 8.8 per cent and 1,400 tonnes or 5.3 per cent respectively, with the former reaching 64,200 tonnes and the latter 27,600 tonnes. Cattle protein concentrates outstripped year previous production at the highest rate, doing so by 41.4 per cent, an increase of 2,900 tonnes, to reach 9,900 tonnes. For the sixth month in succession total pig feed fell below year

earlier output. Production levels in October 2018 dropped by 2,100 tonnes or 1.4 per cent to 152,900 tonnes. This amount was, however, enough to outstrip the 10 year average for the month of 141,600 tonnes by 11,300 tonnes or 8.0 per cent. At 7,400 tonnes, link and early grower feed production remained

static when compared to the same period of 2017. Despite the overall drop from year earlier levels both pig growing feed and pig breeding feed surpassed October 2017 outputs. Pig growing feed production reached 33,800 tonnes in the month, a rise of 5,500 tonnes or 19.4 per cent and pig breeding feed reached 34,400 tonnes, a growth of 2,300 tonnes or 7.2 per cent. However, these upturns were not high enough to make up for a 9,400 tonnes or 11.5 per cent decline in pig finishing

feed, whose monthly production dropped to 72,100 tonnes. This was further compounded by pig starters and creep feed levels falling to 4,200 tonnes, a drop of 600 tonnes or 12.5 per cent. Poultry feed production for the month of October reached record

highs in 2018, with the 502,300 tonnes of feed produced unmatched since records began. Furthermore, the 2018 total surpassed the year previous output by 13,900 tonnes or 2.9 per cent and the 10 year average for the period by 33,300 tonnes or 7.1 per cent. Notwithstanding all other poultry feed, which remained static at

year earlier levels of 12,200 tonnes, all other sectors of poultry feed surpassed year earlier levels. The largest tonnage increase from 2017 output was seen in broiler chicken feed, whose 164,700 tonnes of production had grown by 8,700 tonnes or 5.6 per cent in October 2018. This was closely followed by a 6,800 tonnes or 7.6 per cent rise in layer feed with its production growing to 95,800 tonnes. Turkey feed, at 30,200 tonnes, had grown by 3,800 tonnes or 14.4 per cent whilst chick rearing feed, at 12,000 tonnes, had increased by 1,800 tonnes or 17.6 per cent. Finally, a comparatively small 700 tonnes or 2.7 per cent increase was seen in poultry breeding and rearing feed, which reported 27,000 tonnes of output in October 2018. Following the considerable gains from 2017 outputs displayed in

the preceding three months, October sheep feed production rose at its lowest respective rate since June f 2016. At 41,300 tonnes, sheep feed production had risen by 900 tonnes or 2.2 per cent from a year previously and stood a more substantial 7,900 tonnes or 23.7 per cent above the 10 year average for October. Blends for breeding sheep was the only subset of sheep feed to

drop below year earlier levels. At 800 tonnes, October production levels had dropped by 2,200 tonnes or 73.3 per cent. In contrast, compounds for breeding sheep rose by a comparable 2,400 tonnes or 64.9 per cent from the previous October to produce 6,100 tonnes of feed. An 800 tonnes or 2.9 per cent growth was also seen in compounds for growing and finishing sheep, whose monthly output reached 28,400 tonnes in October 2018. The 5,800 tonnes of blends for growing and finishing sheep was a mere 100 tonnes or 1.8 per cent ahead of year previous output. Horse feed was the only sector to fall behind both year earlier

levels and the 10 year average for the term. The 14,300 tonnes of feed produced was 2,300 tonnes or 13.9 per cent short of 2017 output and additionally, 900 tonnes or 5.9 per cent lower than the 10 year mean of October production. 44,100 tonnes of other feed was produced in October 2018, an

unrivalled amount for the month in question, 5,200 tonnes or 13.4 per cent greater the recorded a year previously and 6,700 tonnes or 17.9 per cent higher than the 10 year average for the period.

Third Quarter and Year to Date Review Total production of compounds, blends and concentrates, including integrated poultry units, during the third quarter of 2018 amounted to 3,441,100 tonnes, bringing the year to date total to 10,490,500 tonnes: a record high for both the first nine months of the calendar year and the third quarter itself. The Q3 production total had risen from 3,304,500 tonnes during the same period of 2017, a
