Adria Docks has its refit and repair service based at Trogir, Croatia. Katarina Omrčen reports positive news: “Lots of things have evolved and nowadays shipyards have very low pollution impact. For example, at Adria and elsewhere sand blasting in open areas is replaced with ultra high pressure water jetting. Yards now also rely on other green technologies in their production processes.”
Jelle Engel at KM Yachtbuilders (KMY) in Makkum, Holland hits the nail bluntly on the head when he says the very act of building yachts is not an environmentally friendly or essential activity. But, on the other hand, KMY and the other yards build sturdy, long-life yachts that supply a living for the 75 or so people who work on
their creation. Most of the materials are either GRP, endangered tropical wood, or aluminium. Engel explains; “KM Yachtbuilders are a aluminium specialist. That is our core material. Producing aluminium takes a serious amount of energy from mining the Bauxiet to the plates that we work with. For us the aluminium, the systems and interior materials are a focus point in our approach and search for sustainability.”

MANOEL ISLAND YACHT YARD
Manoel Island Yacht Yard Ltd. (MIYY) is one of the oldest established refit yards in the Mediterranean. Over the years MIYY has enjoyed respect for its commitment, reliability and workmanship. Its central Mediterranean location and ease of access by sea and air make Malta an ideal location for marine repair activity and a convenient choice to cruise with some of the greatest historical and architectural heritage available anywhere in the Mediterranean. An area of 33,000 sqm includes 7 slipways capable of slipping vessels up to 50 metres, 500
tons of total displacement and ample jetty capacity and berthing facilities for afloat work. Over 600 boats serviced annually with two marine travel hoists with a maximum lifting capacity of 50 and 75 tons. KMY began investigating ways to improve sustainability a few years ago: Explains Engel; “We asked ourselves ‘What does sustainable mean, where to start, how to measure it, how to communicate it, how to motivate the team and how to make it work?’” The yard began and analysed a particular build project, using as many sustainable materials and techniques as possible.
