KALEIDESCAPE: THE ULTIMATE MOVIE PLATFORM
Why Kaleidescape is still the top choice for movie playback. What follows is born from a conversation with Torsten Steinbrecher MD of Qualtron and Norma Garcia-Muro, Kaleidescape VP of Marketing and Tim Barnes, Kaleidescape VP of International & Marine Sales
Torsten: There is a fleet of over 1,100 yachts using Kaleidescape and mainly legacy systems. Why do you recommend they upgrade to the latest Kaleidescape platform?
Tim: Kaleidescape recently announced the availability of its new Terra Prime movie server product line. The Terra Prime features an all-new board design with faster processing power and faster network – the only dedicated movie server with 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet. The new servers are available with either high-capacity hard drives or fast solid- state drives.
Norma: And the Terra Prime solid-state movie servers are the fastest and quietest movie servers available. It is an ideal solution for yachts and large installations as it serves up to 25 simultaneous playback zones.
Tim: What makes Kaleidescape unique is that it is more than just a movie server. Kaleidescape’s platform integrates with every component in a theatre and throughout the yacht. This gives you higher-fidelity video and lossless audio, but it also gives integrative cues to control lighting, shading, seating and screen masking.
Norma: We currently have an upgrade program for yacht owners looking to upgrade their legacy entertainment experience to the latest state-of-the-art offering that only Kaleidescape provides on the open sea. In addition, Kaleidescape can look at what content is already on a Premiere system and provide a detailed report on how much content can be converted to digital files to load on a Terra Prime server, ensuring a turnkey solution to those looking to upgrade.
Torsten: Apart from the user experience, we all agree that STARLINK has been a game changer for high-speed low-latency internet at sea. The Kaleidescape Marine Movie Service for private yachts is a great solution with over 13,000 titles available from the Kaleidescape Movie Store, but new content being delivered on a transport disc is seen as an additional step by ETO’s / AVIT’s
onboard when the owner wants to watch a new blockbuster on a Thursday night. Are you planning to offer quality download as part of the Marine Movie Service in the future?
Tim: Regarding download capabilities from the movie store, we do not talk about future products or offerings. Kaleidescape has done an amazing job in bridging the gap between the high quality of Blu-ray discs and the convenience of streaming. Leading streaming services encode 4K video at an average of around 8 megabits per second. Kaleidescape’s 4K movies are encoded at an average of 65 megabits per second. Notice how much more accurate and detailed the Kaleidescape picture is.
Streaming video suffers from severe compression artifacts, including loss of detail and colour accuracy, and a lot of added noise. While streaming platforms provide content that’s highly compressed and can vary depending on internet bandwidth, Kaleidescape movies are downloaded to a local hard drive, so they play perfectly every time.
The Marine Movie Service was introduced in 2017 and is evolving to meet current market offerings. A recent change was the
ability for a superyacht to have multiple systems in a marine movie store account.
Norma: Not only do Kaleidescape movies carry more video information, but our audio is bit-for-bit lossless quality. Compared to streaming services, Kaleidescape’s higher audio bitrate ensures you will hear everything from the softest whispers to room-rattling explosions.
Our Ultimate 4K System offer is an ideal solution for marine. The Ultimate 4K System includes 800 4K movies available (at the time of shipment) pre-loaded onto two Terra Prime SSD 31TB movie servers along with one Strato C movie player. This ensures that when installed you have the latest movies available.
Torsten: Thank you, guys… summed up beautifully.
