Let’s make this clear

Building your perfect skincare regime to hydrate, cleanse, protect and treat your complexion

T

oners, serums, oils, creams - the list is endless – the order to apply skincare

products can also be totally overwhelming. And lets ‘face’ it, we need to get that glow back after the hard winter months. For the best skincare routine, your chosen set of products must layer up safely and effectively, and cater specifically for YOUR skin type.

So here it is: our step-by-step guide to the whens, whats and whys of building a daily and nightitme skincare routine. Ready? Let’s dive in…

YOUR NIGHT CARE REGIME

Getting enough sleep is crucial to maintaining a healthy lifestyle, but when it comes to getting your ‘beauty sleep’, the right skincare routine can level-up your skin health. Your skin enters a reparative phase while you sleep, so an effective nighttime skincare routine is crucial. Additionally, there aren’t environmental stressors at night (like environmental pollution and sun damage) while you sleep, so products are able to better penetrate when you’re not wearing makeup while you sleep and the skin can breathe. The skin also suffers increased transepidermal water loss – or dehydration – during the night, so at the very least it’s important to prevent this by locking in hydration.

How to perform the perfect facial massage After you have applied your night cream

or elixir, create a loose fist with both hands, your palms facing your chin, and use your knuckles to massage all over your lower face, working from the centre outwards towards your ears and down the sides of the neck. Use your knuckles in a rotary motion all over the face, and then tap your fingertips lightly over the skin and eyes. Next, place your hands into a prayer position and place them on the centre of the face, separate your hands, smoothing the outer edges of the face and sculpting under the cheekbones.

Why is the order of skincare products important? The

order of your skincare routine steps impacts the efficacy of each individual product you use, as well as your routine as a whole – getting it right can unlock the full benefits of those powerful ingredients and let’s be honest, some aren’t cheap, so we need to be getting our monies worth too. AND, this includes you too boys. In fact the mens skin care market is worth over $20 billion a year.

Skincare is a science. It’s a chemistry class, but on your face. Luckily there are plenty of independent resources out there to learn how to build the right one for your skin type.

BUILD A SKINCARE ROUTINE Step 1: Cleanse It all starts here, baby. A thoroughly

cleansed face is the foundation for the rest of your skincare routine steps, removing dead skin cells, impurities, makeup, even microscopic cake crumbs. Use a walnut- sized amount of face wash, and rinse off with cool, clean water.

Step 2: Tone

A toner is a liquid used to restore your skin’s pH after washing, and can help to remove the last dead cells and residues of makeup or impurities left on your skin’s surface.

Step 3: Target

Here’s where you can personalise your routine with a super-charged targeting treatment, like blemish-fighting Tea Tree

Oil. You can mix and match what you use, but apply regularly to really feel the benefit.

Step 4: Eyes

Eyes get a lot of attention. If you do choose to mask tired-looking eyes, it’s best to apply illuminating or awakening products in the morning before makeup. Tip: Dab a tiny amount around the whole orbital bone. Be careful not to pull the skin around the eyes here, it’s delicate.

Step 5: Moisturise

The grand finale – your moisturiser. The hydrating cherry on top of all the skincare steps. Leave moisturiser to absorb for a couple of minutes, before you move onto makeup or SPF. A spot of facial massage could help this along nicely.
