MARKET REPORT POWER TOOLS

The K535i is offered with a choice of battery capacities.

High-powered Husqvarna

Alan Guthrie visits Husqvarna Construction Products’ UK headquarters in Gloucestershire to discuss some of its latest power tools developments.

It’s not just politicians who seek power. Construction professionals also require it in order to carry out tasks faster and more efficiently, and two recent power tool additions from Husqvarna Construction Products show how the company is responding.

The K770 VAC petrol cut-off saw is derived from the existing K770 and, as its name suggests, has been developed to facilitate dust collection when dry cutting. Product Manager Pete Waldron says that, while wet cutting is recognised as an effective means of dust suppression, there remains a requirement for dry cutting at sites where controlling the slurry would be problematic.

To reduce the amount of dust created, Husqvarna’s engineers have developed a special gearbox for the K770 VAC to allow it to run at a lower speed for optimum dust collection without affecting cutting performance. The dust is captured in a specially shaped chamber above the blade guard. The tool’s front end has also been redesigned and the bottom of the guard retracts so that it remains flush against the work surface for optimum dust collection, using a suitable vacuum.

Two years ago, Husqvarna acquired the specialist dust management machinery manufacturer, Pullman Ermator, enabling it to offer integrated solutions.

This design layout also enables the saw’s 300mm blade to achieve a 122mm cutting depth, equivalent to a typical tool with a 350mm blade, says Husqvarna. Furthermore, the company has developed a special range of blades for the K770 VAC.

The tool can also be connected by an umbilical hose to a large dust bag instead of a vacuum. Originally developed for certain overseas markets, Husqvarna believes it could have applications in this country at sites without a convenient electrical supply.

21 Husqvarna has developed new, thinner blades for the K535i.

Also new is the battery-powered K535i cut-off saw. It has a 230mm blade and cuts to a depth of 76mm. Husqvarna has developed a special, thinner blade for the tool, being 2.2mm wide rather than 2.8mm, for efficient cutting.

Husqvarna’s National Field Sales Manager, Andrew Miles, says that the K535i benefits from the experience of the manufacturer’s Forest & Garden machinery division. Instead of housing the battery in an enclosure at the top, it pushes into place from the side and effectively becomes part of the body. This helps keep it cool and reduces the risk of dust contamination. Batteries of 5.2Ah and 9.4Ah are available, respectively giving 20 or 40 cuts for 40mm patio slabs, and 85 or 165 roof tiles per charge, according to the manufacturer.

The K770 VAC is designed for efficient dust collection.

The K535i can be used for wet and dry cutting, and can be fitted with a special ‘shoe’ attachment for dust collection. This can also be used to set the tool’s depth of cut.

To help hirers and users keep track of the saw, batteries, blades and accessories, Husqvarna is offering the product with a tough wooden box with a metal frame so that everything can be kept together as a complete package.

The K535i has a quoted HAV rating of 2.1m/s2

and 2.5m/s2 measured at the front

and rear handle respectively. Using a fast charger, the 5.2AH and 9.4Ah batteries reach 80% of charge in 30 or 35 minutes,

and 100% in an hour or 50 minutes respectively.

Husqvarna promises a number of other significant product launches in the months ahead and has already started planning its exhibit for the Executive Hire Show next February, where it will be able to introduce them to hire professionals.
