IN BRIEF
Industry stalwart passes away Some sad news, as we learn that Barrie Ward, founder
and owner of WM Plant in Carlisle, passed away on 1st September 2022. Barrie has appeared in the magazine numerous times over the years, of course, most recently when WM Plant celebrated its fiftieth anniversary in 2019. WM Plant itself remains in the family, with daughter Rosie and mum Jill in control. The plan going forward is “business as usual”, which is always good to hear. Our sincere condolences in the meantime.
50 years for ladder man Five decades in the same job is a life sentence for some.
For Bobby Blewitt it’s a cause for celebration, as he marks 50 years in the employ of ladder specialists LFI. Gloucester resident Bobby has been a one-company
man ever since leaving school at the tender age of 16, then spending his entire professional career at the company. “He has shown a fantastic work ethic,” explained an LFI spokesperson. “He has consistently delivered to the highest of standards, driven production levels to a new high, and done so with an impeccable safety record.”
Carbon Calculated Following last month’s article about the ‘Global Warming
Potential’, we thought it might be useful to share the ERA’s online calculator, which looks at the CO2 emissions of various construction machinery. The calculator is free to use, assessing emissions by
way of a six stage questionnaire. We can’t vouch for its scientific accuracy, but it’s perhaps a start for smaller hire companies looking to assess the footprint of their fleets. Give it a go at

Poker Face Driven by Makita’s 40VMax XGT battery and a brushless
motor, the VR001G 40VMax XGT concrete vibrator can be operated in two power modes – the standard power setting provides 15,500 vibrations per minute, or 12,000 vibrations per minute for more delicate work. To ensure productivity, the new unit achieves a continuous run time of approximately 50 minutes in normal power mode, when used with a 4.0Ah battery and a ø32mm-1.2m shaft. A switch cover protects the trigger and lock-on button from any untoward splashes.
