Respect the stripes Good groundskeepers are the Dons and Donnas of their art, although

not all with the eye-catching finesse of the winners in the Allett Mowers annual Creative Stripes compo, which is now in its tenth year. The popular contest is open to competitors worldwide. This year’s

top six saw entries from Australia and Canada, although the UK took the remaining places and the overall Champion came from Oxfordshire – Edward Aitken, who is the head gardener at the Cornbury House private estate which includes includes 1,700 acres of ancient British woodland. Ed has entered the competition three times before, always placing in the top six, but caught the judges’ eyes this year with his swooping stripes and sectional features suggesting the British countryside.

Ed describes the process that led to his winning design. “Our lawn

is a very old lawn which we have been renovating to get it up to standard. It was cut with a ride-on originally, which didn’t pick up the grass clippings, so it was a bit of a mess. Now we cut with a Hayter 56 at various heights of cut, I thought I’d stand a chance this year with the circles making it an interesting lawn, so I’m very pleased to have won,” he explained. “I’m not sure what I’m going to do with the prize (an Allett Liberty

43 battery mower with all cartridges and two cartridge stands). I’ll probably use it in my own garden at home as I’ve got quite a large lawn. Maybe I will start doing some patterns!”
