The Promo Column
Spring into action A
s we head into the springtime, I thought Iʼd do a round-up of some of my favourite merchandise promotions that are bursting like green shoots into the marketplace – proof that thereʼs still plenty of innovation around. First up is Nestléʼs Kit Kat, which is handing out more than 55,000 personalised chocolate-covered wafer bars as part of a new campaign. Never mind having your name in lights, what about having your face emblazoned on chocolate? Actually, itʼs the chocolate
April already – where has the year gone? Promotional products commentator Stuart Derrick rounds up the latest promotional merchandise.
Speaking of 3D heads, our good friends in Manchester, Stackawraps, recently produced some stunning imagery for BAFTA sponsor EE. The over-sized recreations of the BAFTA trophy were created using one flat photograph that was converted into a stunning six-foot mask complete with plinth. Stackawraps software and patented rendering results in amazing photo realistic images which come to life when stretched around laser cut 3D frames so they can be disassembled and reused. The Bafta masks were also converted from gold to aqua to match the corporate colours of EE. Anyway, back to the chocolate. Iʼm currently sugar free for Lent and am literally dreaming of sweet stuff, so catalogues such as the Easter one from confectionery specialist Słodkie Upominki is bringing me out in a sweat. Even in a non-sugar deprived state, itʼs easy to see that there are some really beautiful products here. A favourite has to be the art deco truffles, which look like little confectionery jewels and would delight any client or employee. More prosaic, but still lots of fun is a chocolate fried eggs. Roll on Easter Sunday.
Fun promotions Letʼs not forget the importance of good

wrapper that can feature your image, but what a great example of personalisation. As usual with these kinds of promotions,
you have to enter a code online to discover if youʼve won. If you have, the work doesnʼt stop there as you have to upload a picture of yourself which is then printed on to a Kit Kat pack which is sent to you by post. The only decision then is, do you eat it or not?
3D chocolate For chocoholics looking to take things
one step further, technology has the answer – doesnʼt it always? Candy Mechanics is a London-based business that takes 3D scans of your head and turns them into miniature chocolate facsimiles on a stick – a bit like modern day headhunters, but with confectionery, and you keep your head, in every sense of the word. The company can supply the service at events where guests can go home with their own 3D printed lollipop.

oral hygiene among all this talk of sugary treats. GSKʼs Aquafresh aims to help and has linked with Comic Relief 2017 for a fun promotion. As well as donating 10p from the sale of every specially themed pack from the Little Teeth, My Big Teeth and Complete Care ranges, promotional packs also offered consumers the chance to win tooth timers. These come in the form of
Snuffles, a huffing, puffing, burping, singing Aquafresh Bonkers Red Nose
character. There were 20,000 brush timers to be won, with 222 on offer every day. The serious point is that 46% of eight-year olds experience tooth decay in their primary teeth, so itʼs more important than ever to encourage good oral care habits from an early age. Brushing your teeth for two minutes is recommended to let the fluoride do its work, and how many of us can count to 120 elephants while operating a toothbrush? Multi-tasking hell! Of course, Red Nose Day was back again recently with a great raft of brand links such as PG Tips, Babybel, Mars, TK Maxx and Specsavers to name a few. There was also a funtastic range of merchandise to celebrate this always worthy charity event. This year there were 10 character noses to collect alongside items like deely boppers, mugs, pens and wristbands.
A new £1 coin Charities everywhere may soon be getting a bit of a windfall as March 28 saw the new 12-sided £1 coin appear in our change. The old coin will cease being legal tender on October 15 this year, so a lot of them may find their way into charity tins, especially as the annual Poppy appeal takes place from late October. Banks will still accept the old coins, so many may end up as donations I suspect. The coin also presents an opportunity promotionally. LSi is one of a number of firms that is producing a 12-sided trolley coin to complement the new shape. Apparently, you will still be able to use old £1 coins, the new coin and trolley tokens in either shape at major supermarkets, including Tesco, Asda, Sainsburyʼs, Aldi and Lidl. However, companies wishing to adopt the new product and use it to place their logo or message on customersʼ keyrings. It should make sure youʼre in good shape for the spring and beyond.
