Rowlinson Knitwear commits to three-year support to Millie’s Trust

S

choolwear supplier Rowlinson Knitwear has nominated Millieʼs Trust as its key charity until 2019. The announcement follows a company-

wide survey inviting employees to choose the charity they would most like to support, resulting in a unanimous vote in favour of Millieʼs Trust. Rowlinsonʼs support will include an annual donation, raising awareness of the charityʼs causes, fundraising activities and 30 days of employee time annually for voluntary work. Millieʼs Trust was founded by Joanne

and Dan Thompson in memory of their baby daughter, Millie, who died as a result of a choking incident at her nursery in October 2012. The charity delivers affordable paediatric first aid training courses across the north-west and nationally. Rowlinsonʼs managing director, Donald Moore, said: "Living our values is very important to us and traditionally, we have supported many local charities without great fanfare. Despite facing a deeply personal tragedy, Joanne and Danʼs motivation to be a force for good inspired

us and we felt we wanted to give them a bigger commitment and help raise awareness of their amazing work. All our people have the opportunity to get involved with fundraising activities and we are excited to have a team of 10 runners for the Great Manchester Run 10K in May. “In addition, the 30 days of voluntary work means we can provide professional advice, marketing support and even complete practical tasks for Millieʼs Trust, so that they can focus on delivering first aid training that could save lives.” Joanne Thompson, CEO of Millieʼs

Epona is first in UK to join Fairtrade Textile Standard

E

thical clothing supplier Epona is the first company in the UK to announce its backing for

the Fairtrade Textile Program. The scheme is the first of its kind

for fashion companies, monitoring every stage of the supply chain: from cotton field to factory. Through the Fairtrade Textile Standard, Epona workers will receive support and training in production facilities, where it is most-needed to improve their rights. The programme also aims to improve business practice by enforcing fair prices and the delivering living wages. It is a long- term commitment and manufacturers must issue contracts that allow for future wage increases. Epona was purchased by the National Union of Students (NUS) in 2013, in order to ensure the union could oversee the ethics of its clothing supply chain. The company was one of the first in the UK to use Fairtrade cotton, reflecting a sector-leading

commitment to improving conditions. NUS is an integral member of the Fairtrade system and is working towards converting 100% of its cotton to Fairtrade and has taken the UKʼs first step towards running a completely Fairtrade Production supply chain. Rob Young, NUS vice president (society and citizenship), travelled to India in October to visit the companyʼs factory and meet the people and communities benefiting from Fairtrade. He said: “Everyone deserves to

be treated fairly and work under safe conditions. I look forward to working with Fairtrade on this project and continuing NUSʼ work with studentsʼ unions to promote Fairtrade clothing to students across the UK. Iʼm really proud that Epona is the first clothing company in the UK to take this important step towards improving factory workersʼ rights and, having seen the impact of Fairtrade in cotton farms first-hand in India, I feel confident about future progress.”

Trust, added: “As we draw closer to our fifth anniversary, weʼre delighted to have the ongoing support and commitment of the Rowlinson team. It is vital that more families gain the life-saving skills and knowledge that we provide, so they have the confidence to act quickly and competently in an emergency situation. Rowlinsonʼs pledge to support Millieʼs Trust enables us to help more families with the critically important first aid training we offer. We are looking forward to working with them much more in 2017 and beyond."
