Supplier Profile: Madeira UK

Passionate about the sustainable journey

Making sustainable business choices is the way forward and has always been an important part of the Madeira brand ethos. Because Maderia is passionate about supporting this journey, the manufacturer has been working hard to develop new, economically viable products from sustainable resources.

P

lastic pollution is a huge problem that requires fundamental changes in how plastics are produced, used, and ultimately disposed of, one solution is recycling.

When waste is converted into new materials it then becomes a valuable resource and is a critical advancement towards an eco-friendlier textile industry.

Threads go greener! Introducing POLYNEON green 40, a premium quality machine embroidery thread made from 100% recycled polyethylene terephthalate (PET). Via a resource-saving production process, Madeira skilfully transforms PET bottles into a thread that is shiny, robust, and free from harmful substances. With 108 carefully chosen colours from the well-known POLYENON range, this recycled thread is suitable for a range of applications from fashion, workwear and sportswear to denim, shoes, and interiors.

Recycled polyester green thread

efficient production processes only produce durable threads of the highest quality.

5) Premium embroidery thread – The fibres are spun and turned into embroidery thread. 6) A new life – Yes, recycled bottles really can have a new life bringing sustainable embroideries to life!

POLYNEON green production steps

POLYNEON green production process

1) PET Bottles – Post-consumer PET recyclable plastic bottles are collected, sorted, cleaned and prepared for being reused. 2) Flakes – The clear plastic bottles are shredded into flakes which are further transformed into chips. 3) Chips

4) Extrusion – The chips are melted, and the thick liquid obtained is extruded through micro holes.

Madeira’s sustainable credentials Based in the European ‘green city’ of Freiburg, Germany, Madeira has established the MadeiraEnviro system which focuses on recycling, footprint, and lifecycle. • Footprint – Madeira’s AcquaZero patented process for dyeing, reduces water consumption by 60% and natural gas energy is used to reduce emissions. Wherever possible, raw materials from sustainable sources are used, for example, the world’s best-selling CLASSIC viscose thread is produced using treated fibres from naturally sustainable trees.

Certifications to rely on within the textile industry: ISO9001, Oeko-Tex and REACH, all of which ensure suppliers are not using dangerous chemicals or polluting the environment with their production methods. As one of the most modern and efficient thread manufacturing companies in the world, Madeira is proud to maintain its ISO9001 quality certification. All threads have Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certification and fall within Class I (suitable for babies) and Class II (safe for direct contact with skin). In April, Oeko-Tex introduced a new standard for recycled materials. Madeira is pleased to report that POLYNEON green has fulfilled the stricter requirements and attained the Annex 6 certification. Madeira threads are also REACH compliant offering further assurances that the manufacturer is operating in an ethically responsible manner. It’s important to be aware that products manufactured outside the EU do not have any obligation to comply with REACH regulations.

• Recycling – water and heat energy used during production are reprocessed. Energy recovery is used for climate- neutral thread drying while dye tubes and other plastics are recycled. Water is purified and returned to the environment.

• Lifecycle – the longer the life of a product, the less frequently it will need to be replaced, which is why Madeira’s

Another one of the most globally recognised textile labels for organic or sustainable products is GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard). Upon application to the Soil Association charity, a founding member and 25% owner of GOTS, Madeira’s viscose CLASSIC and polyester POLYNEON are permitted for embroidery and decorative stitching within the GOTS V5 guidelines for non-organic accessories. CLASSIC, POLYNEON and FROSTED MATT thread ranges are also vegan friendly.

Continuing Madeira’s commitment, later in the year a brand new, innovative, sustainable embroidery thread called SENSA will be introduced. More exciting news to follow soon, watch this space…
