MARKET REPORT: LATIN AMERICA

Colombia Ángela Díaz Pinzón, executive director of the Colombian Association of Attractions and Amusement Parks (ACOLAP), revealed that the industry in Colombia closes 2022 as one of the best years in history, with a growth of around 17 percent in comparison with 2019. She indicated that this does not mean that the difficulties have ended, but it means that many parks managed to get back on track. In this positive scenario, there are

several investment projects that are underway and that will be completed in 2023. These include the renovation of parks such as Salitre Mágico, Mundo Aventura and the National Coffee Park. Díaz Pinzón also referred to the inclusion of a mechanical amusement park in Hacienda Nápoles, which will become the largest and most complete in the country, if one takes into account not only its extension, of 1,600 hectares, but also its condition as an aquatic park and flora and fauna sanctuary. Another important project is related to

the reconversion of the Piscilago park, which through a large investment, in the medium term, will complement the offer of a water park with an emphasis on the conservation of species, mainly those in danger of extinction, as revealed by Jorge Guatibonza, manager of recreation and tourism of Colsubsidio.

In 2023, the start of operations of

the Caribe Aventura theme park is also expected, which will recreate the most iconic places on the north coast of the country. The director of ACOLAP pointed out that

there is an enormous willingness among businessmen to make investments in 2023. However, there is significant uncertainty in the sector due to factors such as inflation, the value of the dollar for the acquisition of equipment, the effects of the recent tax reform and the impact that the labour reform announced by the government could cause, in terms of payroll cost. Additionally, Díaz said that it is

necessary to wait for the effects of the termination of some incentives granted by the state through the Tourism Law that was

processed to alleviate the consequences of the pandemic. ACOLAP has 209 affiliated

establishments throughout the Colombian territory, which provide 30,000 direct jobs.

Mexico In Mexico, the investment of the industry has maintained an important dynamic despite the difficulties, especially in the Riviera Maya, where the resumption of the Malltertainment Riviera Maya project stands out, a mega theme park that will bring together - in an area of 250,000 square metres - a shopping centre, an amusement park, and an ice rink, the cost of which is estimated at more than USD $4 million. Another important initiative, which came

to fruition in 2022 in the same area, was Aqua Nick, one of the largest themed water parks in Latin America, which required an investment of USD $140 million. Built across 2.7 hectares, Aqua Nick is where all the Nickelodeon themes and characters can be found, with attractions ranging from slides for adrenaline lovers to quiet rooms for the little ones. Hasbro City México is another project

that will soon begin activities in the country’s capital and that so far has required an investment of close to USD $16 million from the Mexican company VXT Negocios. According to Matt Proulx, vice president of entertainment at Hasbro
