Tell me about your work on the hugely popular Harry Potter IP - there must have been a big responsibility to get it right?! “Harry what?” is the first thing I said when I heard his name as costume designer Jany Temime asked me to work on the franchise. Needless to say, I have caught up since and mastered my knowledge on wizarding stuff! Yes, there is a certain pressure of getting it right. I worked on all the films from The Prisoner of Azkaban onwards, read the books, the scripts, then designed and created the look for the Costumes, Hair and Make-up at the WB Studio Tour in London, worked on all HP themed Universal Studio attractions and few other Potter related jobs since. I may not breathe Potter all the time but I think that with the team, we have acquired a pretty good knowledge of the IP. We have also gained the trust of WB and TBP (JK Rowling production company), and approval may be easier sometimes because of our ongoing relationship. So, yes, despite the huge pressure of a world-renowned IP, I feel that we also have that extra w’iz necessary for the job.
You also designed the costumes for the recently opened Nintendo World in Japan… what was the brief and how did you realise it?
The brief was to design the entire IP wardrobe for the park. This was to complement and enhance the experience on various attractions on the land based on the game. Therefore, we opted for a colourful palette using the nostalgic characters as a good starting point for the designs and then I injected a couple of fashion elements to make it my vision. For example, on Mario cart, we looked at modernising the all in one racing overall. We added bold colour statements in specific places to enhance the body shape and made it a two pieces garments for practicality instead of a “onesie.”
How does great costume design affect both the actor’s performance and the guest experience?
From my years on film, I always call the staff wardrobe: 54

costumes. Also, I really believe that the experience needs to be immersive for the staff too. They put on their uniform, and they become extras on a film set. They are not themselves anymore, they incarnate a character, like an actor. It’s my job to make sure that I provide this experience for both the customers at the park and the staff themselves.
How do you see LOLO CREATIVE evolving in the theme park space?
We want to be the “Influencer” in the world of theme parks, making a difference by incorporating fantastic outfits to the immersive world, allowing the customers to forget about the fact that the staff is actual … staff! I would be really proud if in the years to come, people and professional of the industry recognise LOLO CREATIVE as being a pioneer in the evolution of staff “costumes” for theme parks and entertainment.
What is your single biggest achievement? My team. “You are as good as your team!”, so I have to pay credit to my team, the quality of the work we deliver, the attention to details, the variety of designs we propose, the twist and turns we are not scared to take, our various backgrounds make us different too, and the experience we have acquired along the way, we’ve been part of such iconic projects that will last a lifetime.
