associations in the communities of Rust and Waldkirch. He was awarded high honours by the Federal President: In 1984 he received the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany on ribbon and in 1997 the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany, 1st class. For his exemplary and outstanding services to the common good, Franz Mack was made an honorary citizen of Rust in 2001. He is also the holder of the Medal of Merit in Gold from the city of Waldkirch. Franz Mack died on 3 October 2010 in Rust at the age of 89. Franz Mack had been married to Liesel Mack (née Börschig) since 1948, who passed away in 2004. He was the proud grandfather of five grandchildren. The generational shift in the company was very important to Franz from an early stage. Today, his sons, Roland and Jürgen, together with his grandchildren Michael, Thomas and Ann-Kathrin, run the Mack group, which is made up of Europa-Park and Mack Rides in Waldkirch. The children of Jürgen Mack, Frederik and Alexia Mack are also at the start for the company Europa-Park. Europa-Park boss Roland Mack says: “Our father was a great role model for all of us right into the last days of his life. He showed the values of modesty, hard work, perseverance, sincerity, emotions and openness in every part of his life and thus had a lasting impact on our family and our company.” Franz Mack was always an important advisor to the family. His advice to his sons and grandchildren a few weeks before his death: “Always be humble and keep at it.”

Franz Mack’s relationship with Europe “Franz Mack was a European from the very bottom of his heart” a spokesperson tells Park World. “He would have rejected the title of ‘a great European’, however, as he did not value such formalities. But in his own way, he was a wonderful example of a good European. Franz Mack was cosmopolitan throughout his life. Europe features as part of the name Europa-Park. The core for the European focused thinking of Franz Mack lay in the friendship with the former ancestral enemy of France.” That is anything but self-evident: he was in French captivity for years, yet never had reservations about the French. On the contrary, the French became his friends and also his good customers. Therefore, the Mack family decided to celebrate the 100th birthday of Franz Mack by commissioning an art project with the title ‘Europe’ from the artist Ottmar Hörl. For decades, Hörl has been one of the most famous concept artists in Europe. His diverse sculptures on topics of everyday life and large-scale projects with serial sculptures in public spaces, such as his Beethoven, Goethe, Daimler and Hölderlin figures, but also his dwarfs, Spontis, guardian angels, Dürer rabbits and so on, are famous all over the world. In the spirit of his spectacular installations in cities, Ottmar Hörl will build an installation of 100 figures on the subject of ‘Europe’ in Europa-Park near the bronze monument by Franz Mack - a deserved honour for Franz Mack, who simply lived the European idea “without making a fuss.” Franz never saw a difference between nationalities.
