attraction, which may have been launched at any time, in terms of its content, operation and business model, that stands out above all others.”

New judges Building on the success of the last two years, the 2020 event also sees the addition of two new judges to the panel: Nicole Rojo and Duncan Phillips. Nicole is ranked in the Top 10 women for having ridden the most

rollercoasters, currently over 1900. As a representative of the European Coaster Club (EEC) for Germany, Switzerland and Austria, and an attraction industry blogger, she travels the globe in search of the industry’s best attractions and water parks. As a representative of the EEC, Nicole is also involved in promoting the

industry to members and the mainstream media, as well as organising events at theme parks. Commenting on her appointment, Nicole said: “I am really proud to be a

judge. For me the Park World Excellence Awards are one of the most reputable awards in the industry.” Duncan has spent a lifetime in the family entertainment and attractions

industry. In the very early years during the school holidays Duncan learnt the industry working on the family theme park, Gulliver’s, where he gained a unique insight into the operation and development of the emerging visitor attraction. Duncan studied Urban Design and Town Planning at Nottingham

University, going on to complete a masters degree in: Urban Design and Environmental Planning. During this time, he started to apply urban design/city planning concepts to the attractions industry to develop new strategies in the design and layout of attractions and how they can influence the operational side of the business. Duncan spent some 15 years building up Gulliver’s theme parks from one

park to four across the country and by the early 2008 the largest family owned theme park group in the UK. In June 2008 Duncan set up DP Associates (DPA) a strategic leisure

consultancy delivering a wide range of visioning, planning and operational services to the visitor economy worldwide. Duncan launched DP Leisure GB in 2009 to develop and roll out a new

breed of visitor attraction, 360play. The new attraction/FEC was launched in 2009, with its first test site 360play in Knowll Hill, Milton Keynes. 360 Play attractions are now in Milton Keynes, Stevenage, Leicester, Basildon, South Birmingham, Farnborough and Rusden. Throughout Duncan's visitor attractions career, he has been actively

involved in the promotion of the industry at large on a national and international stage. Industry interests and posts include, board director of BALPPA since 2008 (British Association of Leisure Parks Piers, and Attractions)

Nicole Rojo Duncan Phillips

serving on the political advisory committee (working with the UK government to best support the tourism and leisure industry) and on the governance committee for eight years. Duncan currently holds the post of vice Chairman and in 2021 takes

on the role of chairman. On the international stage Duncan has been an active member of IAAPA for the last six years, regularly attending the IAAPA main trade show and taking an active part in education and development of the industry across the wider European region through support of the IAAPA FEC days. Nicole and Duncan join Marek Pisar ski, an established author in the Polish

leisure sphere; amusement industry consultant, Marcus Gaines; Emmanuel Mongon, founder and director, ImaginVest; Aleatha Ezra, director of park member development, World Water Park Association; Phil Taylor, managing director, Team Leisure, Francois and Richard – who are all delighted to return and looking forward to receiving this year’s entries and nominations.
