some of them are superb and there are a couple that could even compete with our theme parks in terms of scale. It’s a real growth area.” I ask Paul what he sees as the industry’s greatest success.

“Two things,” he says. ”The way that the industry has invested in itself over the last five to ten years by creating resorts and including accommodation in their offer so that more people will want to stay in the UK and holiday. “If you’ve got something that’s worth seeing, that’s been

“We are officially bored of talking about Brexit! Though it will probably encourage more staycationing, which is good for our members. I don’t really like the word

‘staycation’, we have moved on from that – many of our members are now effectively resorts, with an accommodation offer be it a tent, a pod or a hotel. The one difficulty we are seeing

saying ‘that’s not my problem, that’s not me’”. So what are the challenges going forward? “It’s very hard

to get anybody to listen to anything that isn’t Brexit related. So it will be interesting to see what the emphasis goes back onto once Brexit is resolved. “The other big challenge is our weather; we need to look

at how our businesses respond to the patterns in it and in many ways, adapt to look after the environment more too. I wouldn’t say we are behind other countries, but I think we do need to make a step change based on what we have learned in the last few weeks [recent climate change protests]. “Just dealing with a few straws isn’t going to be enough;

we have been tinkering around the issue for a while now, but with everything that has gone on the last few weeks, we are realising it’s not just about straws, it’s actually more dramatic than that. And we need to focus on the dramatic. “We seemed to jump two steps rather than one at a time and now we are going to have to jump several more than
