FUJITSU Data resilience
Nick McDonald, account director at Fujitsu, looks at the steps iGaming companies can take to improve their data resilience.

ata resilience is essential in the modern business world. A company’s ability to withstand failures and continue to function with minimal disruption is essential to not only maintaining a good reputation but also retaining customers. The consequences of a lack of data resiliency can be disastrous for a sporting betting company. Your service failing right in the middle of a penalty shoot-out or in the middle of the Grand National could be catastrophic and cause untold damage to your reputation and finances. The impact of one tiny blip can have huge consequences, and it is essential that companies do everything in their power to build their data resiliency and ensure that such a moment never occurs. Of course, there is also data security to consider. The old system of simply having data backed up is no longer enough. iGaming companies should seek to adopt a proactive data resilience strategy rather than a reactive one. A data outage is not something that you want to catch you by surprise, and having systems in place so that customers do not witness any latency or glitches is paramount to success. In a truly resilient system, customers will have no indication that there was ever an issue and events will continue seamlessly. The two biggest obstacles to data resiliency are data volume and network latency. A well-established scalable data storage system can certainly help with the former, while an on-premises data centre can help reduce latency. These issues are constantly evolving, so companies must find a solution that is both flexible and agile to help build their resiliency. This is where a hybrid cloud system can play an important role. Many iGaming companies have embraced the cloud in recent years, but there is a growing trend towards hybrid-cloud solutions as they begin to look for more flexible and scalable options, with standard public cloud services unable to fulfil every requirement. A hybrid cloud environment can allow companies to store data in multiple locations, ensuring that if data becomes corrupted or inaccessible, there is an instant backup ready to take over. From the user’s perspective, this change of data location is seamless, and there is never any

disruption or lag. The presence of an on-premises infrastructure in combination with the cloud provides an extra level of backup that is essential for data protection. Data leaks and outages are a constant source of dread for iGaming operators, so it is important that operators work with experienced partners that can adjust to their needs. Fujitsu’s PRIMEFLEX is an integrated system powered by 3rd Gen Intel Xeon scalable processors that allow companies to take full advantage of the cloud while also keeping an IT presence on-premise. This provides a simple path to a hybrid cloud that gives customers flexibility and control. The iGaming industry is full of complex regulations and requirements, and PRIMEFLEX has all of the necessary protocols in place to ensure operators remain fully compliant. Further control is provided through the Uscale service. This is a scalable, consumption-based solution that allows
companies to upscale and downscale their service according to their needs. Having this level of flexibility can be particularly useful for building your data resiliency, as it allows you to scale to suit the demands of your network accordingly. As businesses grow to accommodate more players and explore more markets, the Uscale service can be scaled accordingly. Fujitsu also works closely with Intel to ensure that all of its products are able to be encrypted and secure, further enhancing the data resiliency of an operator’s service. The iGaming industry is continuing to grow rapidly, and, unfortunately, this means that more threats are also appearing. Having a solid data resiliency strategy is the key to providing a robust and dependable service that will keep your customers coming back, safe in the knowledge that their data is safe and that their betting experience will go uninterrupted.
