Editor’s comment

I went to the Great British Beer Festival at London’s Olympia this month. I’ve probably been seven or eight times before, but not since COVID. It was lovely to be back but it was a much smaller affair than previous years. The layout had been changed to make the most of it, but the fact we were able to do our initial recce and crawl back to where we started in a personal best time let us know there simply weren’t as many exhibitors as pre-pandemic.

The big question that inevitably left our drunken lips was, “are events

worth it for companies?” Planning, building, equipping, shipping, staffi ng, accommodating,

travelling… all massive drains on companies when it comes to dedicating time and effort to a show that might only last two, three of four days. In the case of the GBBF there was at least some cash to be made for a humble pint but imagine a trade show where no money is changing hands. You know… like, for instance, EVERY event our industry holds. We’ve just been told ICE is moving to Barcelona in 2025 (you could almost hear the company expense account creak as the announcement hit). For many companies it’s great news; Brexit clobbered everyone when it came to visas and customs and costs, so a central European location is a blessing. For me (I happen to live 20 minutes from Excel, godammit) it’s a slightly more painful change (and the weather isn’t even that good in Barcelona at that time of year. I checked).

The question is… considering most companies will spend plenty of

November, most of December (and ALL of January) working towards ICE, does anyone get THAT much business from the show to counter the huge drain on resources. I’m sure for some it’s a no-brainer, but for some I’ve spoken to, it’s a “we have to attend or people think we’re going under” affair.

If I have one more meeting where we shout at each other over the adjacent night club-level sound system, ultimately ending with “let’s catch up when we’re back in the offi ce” I might start to think it’s a false economy. Anyway, I’m off for a pint. Cheers!
