Provably Fair
W
hile less of a problem in the mature markets of Europe, proving the legitimacy of a game in a re- regulating or emerging jurisdiction is an important factor when it
comes to earning the trust of players and raising retention rates. This is particularly the case in those markets without strong legacy of online RNG gaming. Provably fair technology acts as a key component
in verifying the legitimacy of games, and therefore assuring players that games aren’t cheating them out of their money unfairly. Games developer
OneTouch.io, for example,
creates ‘provably fair’ table games such as Blackjack Perfect Pairs and Baccarat by using a SHA-256 Provably Fair algorithm. This technology means neither player nor dealer can know the order of the cards before they are dealt. In both games, players can play an active role in shuffling the deck, which in turns ensures the highest level of fairness, randomness and transparency. Players are provided with a summary of the deck in an encrypted, which is randomly generated by the servers. This allows the player to enter a player or seed, or
alternatively they can allow one to be generated from their browser. Now, when the player hits deal, the deck is shuffled once again based on this already- generated seen to produce the final deck. On completion of the hand, the initial deck, dealer seed and final deck are revealed. With players then able to check the consistency of the hand dealt by using a consistency key throughout the process. In layman’s terms, this means the SHA-256
Provably Fair algorithm would create a completely different hash that would not match any of the others should the order of the deck change at any point during the game play, even by a single card. And because the provably fair details are stored in the hand history, they are stored and can be reviewed at the end of a session and not just at the end of each hand The key to retention for operators in less
established markets is a player’s confidence; they need to be sure that they have a chance of winning the game they play online. Offering players the chance to see both the random seed and the

OneTouch Head of Technology Matthew Rochman discusses the importance of verifying the legitimacy of games in emerging jurisdictions, using cutting edge technology.
Provably fair is sure to play an integral part in ensuring the legitimacy of online gambling
verification process is essentially security and reassurance for the player. This has the potential to be a gamechanger in
emerging markets, where online casino may not always enjoy the best of reputations. In many Asia jurisdictions, for instance, live casino products continue to dominate the online sector for precisely this reason. However, slots and traditional online casino games are beginning to grow, and technology such as provably fair titles will only help power this growth further. There is also significant appeal in decentralising this aspect of gaming, providing access to all players to check they are happy a game is fair.
This is part of a wider trend in gaming where those
operators who empower their players soon reap the benefits. This might mean empowering users via customisation options, choice of content, or, in this case, the option to check a game is fair. With users becoming more conscious of online
security and transparency, not only in gambling but in day-to-day life, provably fair is sure to play an integral part in ensuring the legitimacy of online gambling.
