INTERVIEWWITH SENSIO Q&A Dr Fariz Khellaf Richard Bellwood
Sensio
BKU caught up with Dr Fariz Khellaf, Sensio’s Technical & Exports Director, and Richard Bellwood, Sales Director.
BKU: Tell us about Sensio’s sustainability strategy. Fariz: The sustainability strategy is based on three pillars. One of them is product design. The other one operational efficiency. And the third one is social responsibility. We design our product always with sustainability in mind. We use eco-friendly materials such as wood, recycled plastic and metal, and avoid using harmful substances such as lead, mercury and cadmium. On the operational efficiency, we’ve already made various efforts. One of them is solar panels, which is obviously renewable energy and powers our factories and our company cars. We also installed all our lighting using LED technology to optimise our energy use. On packaging, we’re actually reducing the size of our product, using degradable material for our packaging.
BKU: Can you share any upcoming product launches that you’re particularly excited about? Fariz: Sensio is all about innovation. Innovation and making like simple is our core value. It’s also our passion and our purpose. Innovation is about adding value to our customers. We’ve got 18 patents - some of them are granted, some of them under examination. Some of these products
are exhibiting here at the show. For example, the track system is a product that will add value to the installer because it’s so easy to install. It’s a track where light can magnetically couple into the track. It’s easy to install, it takes a few minutes, and it adds value to the end user because they can attach lights anywhere they desires. We also added a USB charger and IR sensor,
so it’s really a breakthrough in this industry. We’re also exhibiting the lithium-ion battery. It’s based on rechargeable lithium and is environmentally friendly. As I said before, sustainability is key to us, and this particular product is great for the installer because it’s easy to install and also benefits the end user because one single charge can last you up to three months.
BKU: What is Sensio doing to make kitchen installations even easier for fitters? Fariz:Well, kitchen installation is very challenging for our features. So, at Sensio we are committed to providing innovative solutions and services. All our products are designed to enhance functionality, aesthetic and safety while being easy to install. Sensio is a company that fitters can rely on to provide them with good service and good products.

RICHARD BELLWOOD BKU: Richard, what are the key trends that you’re observing in the KBB industry this year? Richard:Where to start! I think the first notable shift is colour trends. It feels like we’re finally getting rid of the 50 shades of grey: we’re seeing more emerging colours – more natural tones like taupe, etc. – there’s a prominence of green and various shades of green coming through, and there are also a lot of bold colours. We’re also seeing lots of texture – reeded and fluted is particularly big at the moment, whether that’s in glazed doors or it’s in handle texture. Work surfaces are becoming much more striking, with very heavy and dramatic patterning.

BKU: And how is Sensio lighting adapting its business strategy to the current market conditions? Richard: Bizarrely enough, while we’d all rather be in a buoyant market, it’s actually playing into our favour a little bit. When it comes to consultative selling, there are a lot of things on the agenda for the kitchen designers and the salespeople, and invariably lighting slips down that agenda. But right now, when the market has contracted by 20%, people realise that if the volume of kitchen sales is not there, they have to get the basket value, and therefore lighting becomes much more relevant. For us, our strategy has really evolved around education. We have the tag line “Making Lighting Simple”, and we currently have six regional training managers out on the road all day every day, visiting our customers to educate them on just how simple lighting is, and to give them the knowledge to talk about our product with conviction and confidence.
