PHAM NEWS | SEPTEMBER 2025 38 Vans& Racking

The UK’s most MOT friendly vans revealed

Van insurance company Tempcover has analysed over 33 million MOT test results to determine which of the UK’s most popular vans are most likely to pass. The Ford Transit Custom emerged as the most MOT-friendly, with the highest pass rate, while the Fiat Scudo had the lowest. For van drivers, an MOT can be a

source of stress. Failed tests mean potential repair costs, downtime, and disruption to work. That’s why understanding which models are more likely to pass is so important. Ford dominated the high-

performing models, with both the Transit Custom and Transit Courier achieving top pass rates. Vans from Toyota, Mercedes-Benz,

and Volkswagen also ranked well, along with the Fiat Ducato, which stands in contrast to the Fiat Scudo, the worst overall performer. Other low scorers included models from Renault and Vauxhall. Claire Wills-McKissick, expert

in temporary van insurance at Tempcover, comments: “While some vans are statistically more likely to pass their MOT, we understand that it can still be a stressful time for many drivers.

“The MOT is an important step

in ensuring your van is roadworthy and safe. If you fi nd yourself in a situation where repairs are needed, temporary van insurance off ers a fully comprehensive, fl exible solution, allowing you to borrow a friend or family member’s van and get on the road. This helps to minimise disruption and give you greater peace of mind during a challenging time.” ◼ phamnews.co.uk/925/67

Each unit includes a built-in holder for a Bluetooth tracker such as an AirTag or SmartTag, allowing users to monitor their tools more closely. The range has earned police-backed Secured by Design status and a silver rating from Sold Secure, reflecting its emphasis on protection. Bunker is a trading name of Draper Tools Ltd. ◼ phamnews.co.uk/925/68

EV tech keeps getting better

The electric van range in the UK has increased by 38% over the past five years, rising from an average of 144 miles in 2020 to 198 miles in 2025, according to data from Leasing.com. This improvement means many electric vans can now complete long commercial routes, such as London to Manchester, on a single charge. Battery capacity has grown

27%, from 45 to 58kWh, enhancing operational flexibility by reducing downtime. Payload capacity has also improved, with electric vans now carrying an average of 887kg, just 36kg less than diesel vans, making them

more practical for business use. The rapid charging network

in the UK has nearly tripled since 2021, with 15,109 rapid and ultra-rapid chargers available by early 2025. Most new chargers are ultra-rapid, cutting charging times significantly. Mike Fazal, CEO of

Leasing.com, says that while infrastructure and costs remain challenges, changes in licensing and tax policies could boost electric van adoption. Upcoming licence reforms will allow standard drivers to operate zero- emission vans up to 4.25 tonnes, removing a key barrier. ◼ phamnews.co.uk/925/71

The Transporter line-up from Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles now includes two additional battery electric variants: the 8-seater Shuttle and the versatile Kombi van. These are the fi rst time both models have been off ered with an all-electric powertrain, with prices starting at £53,404 OTR for the Kombi Commerce Plus and £56,129 OTR for the Transporter Shuttle Life. Both variants are available on Personal Contract Plans from £449 and £589 per month respectively, including a £2,500 deposit contribution. The BEV Kombi is off ered with short or long wheelbase options,

providing seating for fi ve (with an optional sixth seat) and a payload capacity of up to 896kg. It features a 65kWh lithium-ion battery delivering a WLTP range of up to 196 miles. Similarly, the BEV Shuttle

comes with short and long wheelbase choices, seating eight standard with the option of a ninth seat. It off ers a WLTP electric range of up to 194 miles,

making it suitable for families or professional hire companies. These new electric models join

the existing all-electric Panel Van and the diesel-powered Kombi, Shuttle, and Panel Van variants. The expansion adds more zero- emission options to the Transporter range, meeting demand for cleaner alternatives without compromising on payload or passenger space. ◼ phamnews.co.uk/925/70
