Victorian elegance in modern renovation

Cast iron radiators from Stelrad are playing a key role in the transformation of a mixed-use property into an inviting and comfortable single family home.

detached property in South Devon purchased their home, it was still divided between commercial and residential use. The lower two floors served as consulting rooms, while the upper levels formed a two- bedroom apartment. For over a year, the owners

have been waiting for planning consent to convert the entire building back into a five- bedroom, three-bathroom family home. In the meantime, they have only been able to carry out the first phase of their envisioned renovations. Their plans include an extensive kitchen extension from the rear of the ground floor, extending down into the garden.

Inviting atmosphere But already the property is impressive – with high ceilings, huge windows and Victorian shutters, with polished wooden flooring and two Labradors to make it feel homely. When it came to the heating

system – an essential priority in a property of this size and age – it clearly required a total revamp and while the work

Ample choice The radiators are floor standing with in-built feet for extra stability as they are significantly heavier than their steel counterparts. They are available in two heights and a wide variety of widths – a total of 20 sizes available. And as you would expect,

is stalled waiting for the new Worcester Bosch 40kW boiler to drive the system, they have installed five Stelrad radiators cast iron radiators which have already proven their value in the recent months. Traditionally, Stelrad has

supplied steel radiators and continues to do so with more than two and a half million radiators manufactured each year. But in the past few years, cast iron column radiators – which were first around in Victorian times – have come into vogue again so the

manufacturer has added a selection of Cast Iron Column radiators to its ever-widening range. The new Stelrad Radiator

Cast Iron Column radiator has been designed to enhance any modern or period home, featuring a distinctive, ageless look and a natural cast finish. The classic, clean lines suggest a genuine piece from yesteryear, but there is also the option of either antique brass or brushed nickel TRVs to provide modern heating control.

they come with a cast iron ten-year warranty. In this case, the property owners also stipulated the colour they wanted the radiators delivered in – an attractive gold finish that matches much of the other décor in the home including taps and electric fittings throughout the home. “We were immediately struck

with the look of these excellent radiators and how well they would complement the rest of the décor in the home,” says Amanda Lumley. “The added benefit of being able to specify the colour we needed meant we didn’t have to compromise

on design and the warmth that these radiators deliver proves that they provide the levels of comfort heating we need in these larger rooms where we rely 100% on the radiators to keep us toasty all winter.”

Good response The team at Stelrad is delighted that the cast iron radiators have been met with such positivity: “We’re pleased to be able to respond to customer demand and provide this excellent range of cast iron radiators,” says Stelrad’s head of marketing, Chris Harvey. “The arrival of this range

confirms our position as a one stop shop for all things radiators and we’re delighted with the early response to the new range we’ve received from installers, merchants, direct customers and even interior designers up and down the UK.” ◼ phamnews.co.uk/925/57

Low temperature, maximum efficiency

David Relihan, vice president of Myson UK & Ireland, discusses tailored solutions for low temperature heating.

Lowering flow temperatures to around 45°C, especially when combined with effective insulation, can reduce energy consumption by up to 30%. Yet the appeal of low temperature heating goes well beyond energy savings. These systems are highly

versatile, working seamlessly with condensing boilers and

renewables such as heat pumps and solar thermal. Comfort is also enhanced, as low thermal inertia emitters respond quickly and distribute heat more evenly throughout a space. Upgrading radiators or installing UFH offers the chance to improve both interior aesthetics and property value. While underfloor heating

is often top of mind for low temperature systems, most radiators, if correctly sized, are just as suitable. We here at Myson offer a wide range that includes hydronic radiators in panel, column and designer styles, with both horizontal

and vertical options. Smart innovations like the Ulow E2 panel radiator, with integrated fans for improved convection at ultra-low temperatures,

further expand the possibilities. The iVector S2 fan convector delivers heating and cooling in a single unit, making it perfect for pairing with heat pumps.

Towel warmers, such as the Topaz double ladder rail, offer impressive output even at lower temperatures, and electric radiators are available for intermittent use or integration with solar PV. A common concern with low

temperature heating systems is slower warm-up times, but this can be addressed with smart control strategies. Maintaining set-back temperatures when spaces are unoccupied ensures faster recovery. Our Unisenza Plus wireless control system allows users to monitor and adjust room temperatures via a simple online app, from anywhere at any time, helping optimise comfort while reducing energy use. ◼ phamnews.co.uk/925/58
