The hidden costs of crime

This month’s cover story highlights the ongoing issue of tool theft – both from vans and on construction sites – and shows just how prevalent it is within this industry and other trades. Calls for harsher sentences and a government crackdown seem likely to fall on deaf ears, though, as there appears to be a widely held opinion amongst those responsible for our law enforcement that robbery and non-violent off ences should be considered relatively low priority. Such incidents are far from victimless crimes, however, with those targeted left dealing with the costs, both fi nancially and mentally. For anyone who needs their tools to earn a living, the loss of

equipment will obviously have immediate repercussions in being able to continue working without interruption – adding the likely loss of livelihood to that of the cost of replacing what was lost. But tool theft can also have long-term consequences for a victim’s mental health and wellbeing. Whether you’re a hardened trade professional or a vulnerable pensioner, having someone steal from you is bound to have an impact on general confi dence levels and your trust in other people. Even tradespeople who have not had any personal experience

of theft can be troubled by reports about such seemingly commonplace dishonesty. A recent survey from van storage solutions brand Bunker found that over a third of tradespeople felt that it was their biggest worry at work, while the online community ‘On The Tools’ has revealed that nearly 90% of tradespeople are worried about the perpetual threat of tool theft. The sad fact is, despite numerous campaigns for ‘something

to be done’, the only thing that is likely to ensure that tools and vans are kept safe from thieves is increased investment in security measures. Surveillance cameras, heavy-duty storage and sophisticated tracking systems might not be cheap but they can all play a part in providing some peace of mind. And what price can you put on that?
