Meeting hot water demand
Can domestic equipment stand up to the demands of a commercial application? Navien recently responded to the challenge with a system that is now meeting the considerable heating and hot water demands of Heathergate Holiday Park’s new leisure center, complete with luxury spa facilities and indoor swimming pool.
B
oasting acres of parkland on the outskirts of the North Pennines and within five miles
of Northumberland Park, Heathergate Holiday Park is an award-winning holiday destination. To complete a project of this size while also providing reliable and efficient heating for its customers, the park needed a heating system that could meet its commercial-sized demand. With these new plans for
development came a need to maintain a consistent pool temperature of 29°C while also supplying hot water to five communal showers, a drench shower, six wash basins and a kitchen sink – all while supplying two underfloor heating zones for the gym, bathrooms, and office spaces. There was also the added
complexity of running the system as efficiently as possible to ensure end- user satisfaction, all while reducing Heathergate’s carbon footprint. Tyler Adams, director of TBA
Heating & Plumbing Ltd, who completed the installation, says: “Our challenge was to design a system best suited for a constant flow of water from the swimming pool plant room, while also providing enough flow rate to ensure each of the washing facility outlets would work simultaneously.” Typically, a facility of
this size would require a commercial boiler of 70kW or more, together with space- consuming water tanks – and even then, there would be the risk of shortage during peak periods. Having weighed up the challenge, including the

absence of first fix pipework, the installer realised this was the perfect situation for Navien’s new ON technology as an easy, cost-effective and energy efficient alternative to larger commercial systems. It was certainly a different approach, but one that paid dividends.
Pioneering solution This fully bespoke solution comprises several integrated elements. At its heart are two 54W NCB700 ON Combi Crossover boilers, each of
which has the power to serve hot water to three showers simultaneously, essentially realising new potential for the commercial sector. Coupled with Navien’s
innovative NaviCirc valve, this maximises recirculation of hot water and minimises wastage to deliver flow rates of up to 22 litres per minute (at 35°C temperature rise) – an ideal solution for the new leisure centre. The system linked the two
NCB700 ON Combi Crossover boilers with a high efficiency tankless NPE water heater in a cascade, which effectively links water heaters together, ensuring consistent hot water to multiple outlets, eliminating the risk of running out during periods of high demand. As all units communicate and work together, they share the workload, reducing wear and tear, providing redundancy backup, and helping reduce energy consumption. As an added benefit for
installers, all of Navien’s components, including the pressure relief valve (PRV), are
designed for accessibility and easy maintenance and repair. Tyler adds: “Navien’s
solution was capable of meeting the demands of the facility with the added benefit of a compact but powerful system. Installing a larger, single-unit commercial boiler would have cost the customer a lot more money.”
Comfort and convenience Despite having its origins in the domestic market, the ability to connect and cascade Navien’s technology has proved to be perfect for this commercial facility, meeting an energy requirement that more traditional, single-unit commercial systems can’t currently cost-effectively match. From the moment the
system was switched on, the benefits have been clear. The first thing the holiday park owners noticed was the high level of comfort and warmth through the new leisure facility, helping to create a welcoming and relaxing space. Equally important,
there has been no shortage of hot water, even at the busiest times thanks to the consistent, endless recirculation built into Navien’s ON technology. In fact, the park owners firmly believe that the showers are achieving the same, if not better than, flow rates and temperatures that customers might expect to see in their own homes. “We couldn’t be happier
with the new heating and hot water system,” says Jason Caine, co-owner. “With little to no original system in place, we knew it was going to be a difficult task to ensure our facility went above and beyond the needs of the residents and holidaymakers here at the park. “We’ve got various water
demands and they’ve been met very effectively and efficiently by the new system. The hot water supply to the showers and sinks throughout the building is better than we expected, and we’ve had no issues with flow rates or temperature drops, and our running costs have been significantly lower than budgeted for.” With 20% less energy
consumption and an ultra- high efficiency rating of up to 107.2% for the NPE tankless water heater, the A+ rated energy technology has been a revelation in terms of cost and carbon footprint. A 12-year warranty on the Combi Crossover boilers, coupled with them being 20% hydrogen- ready, also means Navien’s solution should help to secure the owner’s investment for the long-term.
