It’s time for some joined up thinking
The views expressed by Brian Penny in the May 2024 edition of PHAM News, advocating a return to coal and gas, came as an overdue, welcome breath of fresh air. I appreciate the debate regarding protecting our under-threat planet is paramount. However, the constant ‘banging of heat pump heads against the wall’ is becoming wearily predictable, apart from being largely inaccurate and confusing for a bemused Joe Public who simply yearn for some joined up, easily understood, thinking.
Back in the eighties, I and a small group
from our central heating company were off ered the chance to visit Coventry colliery. The working conditions certainly opened our eyes – it was like stepping back in time. Health and Safety? You’re having a laugh!
However, a big positive to take from this
enlightening experience was to learn the fact that the Warwickshire coalfi eld that was being exploited stretched all the way to Oxford and consisted of top-quality coal (unlike the inferior products currently being imported). The problem back then, as is the case now, was the requirement to provide a suitable scrubbing plant to ensure emissions could be brought down to an acceptable level. The technology was there but the cost meant the sums just didn’t add up.
But that was then, and now the consensus is that this valuable resource can be recovered economically, negating the need for costly imports which may become diffi cult to obtain in an increasingly unpredictable geo-political climate.
We all know that in new-builds, heat
pumps can work fi ne, but, as has been pointed out for the umpteenth time, one size doesn’t fi t all.
It’s high time our government obtained
the views of the people on the ground and in the real world, rather than the ‘money men’ sitting in their Ivory Towers, with their own murky agendas taking preference.
Fresh thinking is indeed required but
rather than mere pie-in-the-sky solutions, constructive, sensible and, above all, practical varieties have to be the way forward. Is this too much to ask?

Hard water, easy solution.
No.1 product when it comes to whole-house protection against limescale build-up.
ActivFlo is a complete and easy-to-install solution to hard water and the limescale problems it causes. It is fitted to the water supply coming into your home and changes the bonding properties of the naturally occurring minerals in the water flowing through it.
This simple process, which requires no chemicals, means that the water minerals passing through the ActivFlo cannot combine together to form crystals. As a result, they cannot cling to surfaces and cause limescale build-up, and your taps, shower and appliances will work more efficiently and last longer.
Whole house protection!
