Looking to the future

By the time our next issue comes out a new government will be up and running, with Rishi Sunak having surprised political

commentators by announcing a General Election for 4th July. Whatever the outcome on the day, most of the heating industry will be hoping that the next administration will be able to provide a bit more clarity about how the country will navigate its transition away from fossil fuels to a low carbon future. A recent survey undertaken

on behalf of SNIPEF (see page 4) suggests that there is widespread dissatisfaction with recent delays, cancellations, and scaling back of climate change targets and policies. As the Association points out, such delays and shifting goals only help to undermine public trust in policy direction and means that businesses in the sector could be dissuaded from committing to the necessary investments required in technology and workforce training. Both major parties have acknowledged the need to invest more

money in apprenticeships and the development of new skills, but words are cheap and arguably of even less value during an election that encourages politicians to come up with new policies and ideas at a faster rate than the media has time to digest them. The next government’s room for manoeuvre is likely to be restricted by inevitable budget restrictions and an uncertain economic outlook, but it’s important for upcoming generations to at least aspire to a brighter future. In what threatens to be a depressingly dull campaign, anyone who can ignite some enthusiasm among younger voters to go to the polls will deserve some praise. Headline- grabbing plans such as the re-introduction of National Service, seemingly designed to appeal to those at the older end of the electorate, are unlikely to provide that spark, but perhaps a clear strategy for achieving a less-polluted, more sustainable future could prove a vote winner with those who expect to be around for a few more years yet.
