Smart home spotlight

Smart home interoperability

Florian Deleuil, smart home director at Legrand-Netatmo explains how homes are becoming smarter with Matter.

B

efore the Matter standard was introduced, companies had to work to make their products compatible with the three ecosystems – Apple, Amazon and Google. This required a lot of work so most companies

opted for the former. However, we’ve found it important to provide as much interoperability as possible since the beginning, that’s why most of our products are compatible with the main vocal assistants. In the future, it will be easier for the brands involved in smart home because they will only need to make them compatible with Matter. Together with over 220 member companies of the Connectivity

Standard Alliance, we have worked within the Legrand Group to develop a communication standard that promotes interoperability of smart home products regardless of their brand. This means that devices that comply with the Matter standard will work seamlessly with other Matter- enabled products, making it a game- changer for everyone. The Matter standard is backed by IP

technologies such as Wi-Fi or Thread. These protocols allow products to connect with each other. However, to interact usefully, they must also speak the same language. Matter formalises this

language and allows interoperability between products on the home network. The Smart Home experience thus becomes simpler, more reliable, and perfectly secure.

How does Matter transform Smart Home interoperability? Smart home technology has posed several challenges in the past, with a wide array of technologies, applications, voice assistants, and connected

solutions causing confusion and frustration among mainstream users. The Matter standard eliminates this barrier and enables manufacturers of smart home technology to ensure compatibility with other brands and products, making it easier for customers to integrate different devices into a personal smart home ecosystem. Matter will transform the smart home into a universally loved and used

space, regardless of whether customers opt for Amazon, Google, or a mix of different products. When all devices speak the same language, customers can plug them in with their end-user ecosystems and enjoy the benefits of smart technology. Netatmo has launched a new Thread-enabled smart security sensor

which will be available to purchase later in the year. It’s our first product under the Matter standard, specifically designed to improve home security and comfort, so Netatmo can continue to simplify smart home access for everyone. The Netatmo Smart Security Sensor is equipped with a contact sensor

and an infrared motion detector. It is designed to improve home security and comfort equally. The sensor, placed on doors and windows, detects their opening and alerts the user by smartphone. Users can also remotely check the ‘open’ or ‘closed’ status of each equipped door or window. The sensor also enables infrared motion detection. With Matter

compatibility, it can interact with several other connected products and, for example, turn on the heating if the room is occupied, turn it off if it is empty, turn on air conditioning or lights when motion is detected. Thus, it is the foundation stone for a truly smart home. With Thread and Matter compatibility, the Netatmo Smart Security

Sensor can interact with all compatible products, regardless of brand. As a stakeholder in this standard, Netatmo continues to open up smart home access to as many consumers as possible. In our own ecosystem with apps like ‘Home + Control’ and ‘Home +

Security’, we already have features like advanced scheduling and scenarios. Matter will allow us to expand upon this even further. As an enthusiastic stakeholder in the Matter standard, Netatmo will

continue to work towards making smart home technology accessible to more consumers. We are excited about innovating with Matter in mind and look forward to seeing what the future holds. Stay tuned!
