FEATURE Impact receipt draft (centre)

(raw materials, processing, assembly). Working with the Higg Index and Worldly, the company has extended the calculation to a full cradle-to-grave lifecycle assessment (which also includes emissions related to transportation, delivery and end-of-life). Rather than applying a generic industry-average figure, the impact receipt calculates shipping emissions using Apidura’s own historical shipping data. Impact receipts proactively communicate carbon emissions to the person making the purchase, rather than requiring them to look for individual product information on Apidura’s website. ‘We see that as a matter of

responsibility; removing the friction for customers who are interested, and putting it on the radar for people who might not have thought to look for it,’ explains Fahey. For each order, the buyer will get an itemised list of carbon emissions associated with each product, expressed in kilograms of CO2e or carbon dioxide equivalents. The calculation includes raw material processing, assembly, packaging, transportation, delivery and product end-of-life. It excludes the energy possibly used in recycling its recyclable packaging and production wastage, such as unusable offcuts. For retailers, the information could

provide another way to understand and communicate their own environmental impact. Some of Apidura’s retail partners already have a specific interest in measuring emissions, and the receipts could give environmentally-conscious shops a mechanism for incorporating the carbon impact of their purchases into their own reporting. For consumers, the immediate value is readily available information. At first, the receipts will not provide a straightforward comparison with competing bikepacking products, because few brands currently provide equivalent data. Fahey nevertheless hopes that practices such as this will eventually become normalised. She compares it with nutritional information on food products. What initially felt unfamiliar eventually became

a standard piece of information that consumers could use when making purchasing decisions, such as the UK’s Multiple Traffic Light or the EU Nutri- Score systems. In the same way, an impact receipt could give consumers a point of reference: how does the carbon impact of buying a new saddle pack compare with other activities, such as flying? Another aspect of impact receipts is transparency. Complex supply chains can mean that brands themselves do not always know where their products were made or what the consequences of their manufacturing decisions are. If making carbon emission information available becomes normalised, companies will have to look at their own supply chains more closely.

A long-term process Fahey jokes that ironically, the cost of this measuring process is not something Apidura has even attempted to estimate. She explains that impact receipts are the latest step in the brand’s efforts to quantify its environmental impact, and rely on many existing building blocks, such as quantifying Scope 1, then 2 and 3 emissions.

‘Each little step has brought us a little bit closer to the possibility of doing this,’ she says. Refusing planned obsolescence,

avoiding discounting, taking time and resources to track emissions and working with suppliers to reduce environmental impact are all part of the same philosophy. Apidura is a leading brand in

bikepacking bags despite ever-increasing competition. Fahey puts its success down to the quality and innovativeness of its products, rather than an aggressive

growth or marketing strategy. ‘We’re very product-oriented; we’re product-led,’ she

says. ‘You start with making the right product. Build it properly. There will always be a market for that.’ The impact receipts represent the latest step in that

approach: not simply making a product intended to last, but providing customers with more information about the environmental cost of producing and buying it. 
