BRANDS
material has been developed to preserve the characteristics customers already associate with the brand: durability, waterproofness and repairability. In other words, the innovation is not positioned as a lighter-touch alternative to performance, but as a way of protecting it. In terms of technical details, Tidura features a high-tenacity, solution-dyed yarn with strong UV resistance and reduced water, chemical and energy consumption in production. Products use the TPU-coated woven material produced on ORTLIEB’s campus in Heilsbronn, with the material engineered for the brand’s high-frequency welded construction.
PFAS, PVC and the materials question Materials remain one of the more complex sustainability issues in waterproof luggage. ORTLIEB highlights both its 100% waterproof performance and the availability of PFC-free alternatives across parts of the range and also points to long service life as a sustainability lever: if a bag remains waterproof, repairable and useful for years, the environmental impact is spread over a far longer period of ownership.
The new fabric is also presented as part of a move towards
more tightly controlled chemistry and production. There’s also increased importance in avoiding the problematic durable water-repellent treatments increasingly scrutinised

across the outdoor sector. The key point being that ORTLIEB is trying to connect material innovation with repairability rather than treating sustainability as a single-material claim.
A trade opportunity for retailers Sustainability can be difficult for retailers to sell when it is expressed only in corporate targets. ORTLIEB’s advantage is that its policies can be translated into everyday shop-floor conversations: this product is made to be repaired; parts are available; the brand supports local service; and the bag is designed to have a long working life. A premium pannier or commuter bag becomes easier to
justify when staff can explain its waterproof credentials and also its aftercare pathway. The IBD is no longer just selling a new product; it can talk about keeping that product in use.
What comes next The first products using Tidura are being introduced as an addition to the ORTLIEB luggage range rather than an overnight replacement. That staged approach reflects the realities of a large established product line, particularly one with heritage models that customers expect ORTLIEB to continue supporting. The direction of travel, however, is clear: more vertical integration, more localised control and more transparency around product footprint.
