pryder@datateam.co.uk EDITORIAL Our Impact
Sustainability. Whilst there are many definitions, and it will mean something different depending on an individual’s interpretation, one definition is ‘the quality of causing little or no damage to the environment and therefore able to continue for a long time.’ In the noise of everyday life, how often do you think about sustainability? Whether that’s as a business or on a personal level. It can come down to the smallest actions, but collectively, as an industry (as with many other industries), we could do better. Do you make sure things are recycled, or check if schemes or options are available for the waste you create? But it goes beyond that: what happens once it’s taken to be recycled? Where does it end up? And, if we consider the very start of the cycle, what energy goes into creating something in the first place? It can feel pretty overwhelming. But it’s important, not just for us, but for future generations. It can come down to choosing a brand that does business more sustainably, using available recycling schemes, and trying to reuse or reduce waste where possible. It isn’t always possible, but at the very least, small changes can have a bigger impact.
This issue focuses on sustainability, from the future of what training might
look like to those who are working on becoming more sustainable. From planting trees with every bike sold to looking after our trails, each action has consequences, good and bad, but with most, a collective effort turns the tide. We’re privileged to enjoy riding bikes, in so many forms. And many of us care deeply about the environment and our impact on it. Perhaps now is a good time as any to see if there’s any change that we could make to lessen it, even if it feels immeasurably small.
