Summer Game Fest & Tribeca Games Spotlight

If we hit our deadline correctly, you should be reading this on the day that Summer Game Fest Live is due to air. The digital show, hosted by the ubiquitous Geoff Keighley, almost managed to fill the void left by E3 in 2020 and will be looking to do the same again this year when we get treated to a smattering of video updates and reveals. Last year’s broadcast pumped Elden Ring into our eyes for the first time, so if you

have a most wanted game for 2023 that’s yet to be seen, you might want to tune in. Keep watching afterwards, as the Tribeca Games Spotlight will follow on straight afterwards.

Call of Duty Black History Breakdown

Black History Walks arrange tours of London as well as educational talks to help bring black history to the fore. Unsurprisingly videogames don’t feature prominently on the organisations schedules, but this interactive Zoom presentation promises to explore one in particular and by extension gaming in general. Topics such as the military- industrial complex, propaganda and radicalisation suggest that Call of Duty could be in for a rough night, but the overarching question, of whether videogames are a help or a hindrance to black people and history, is undoubtedly a necessary one that we expect will be thoroughly explored.

The Quarry

Taking a well-earned break from its Dark Pictures Anthology series, Supermassive Games is poised to release The Quarry this month. Though not linked to the studio’s 2015 Playstation 4 hit Until Dawn, the game does appear to have a similar horror vibe, with its cast of young adults this time placed in a summer camp rather than a winter retreat. Performances from the likes of David Arquette, Ariel Winter, Brenda Song, Justice Smith and Lance Henriksen aside, what looks to set the game apart from the studio’s previous output is its approachability and replayability; with a reported 186 different endings and innovative local and online multiplayer options.
