A key driver for GEA’s technological improvements in its packaging offerings is a reduction on environmental impact. Offering an example for the bakery industry is GEA’s horizontal MAP packaging machine which incorporates a new evacuation and gas injection system and new film heating systems which are said to enable the use of extremely thin packaging materials or the use of mono-materials as well as paper-based packaging materials. GEA will be showing its latest technology updates at IFFA in Frankfurt, Germany, from 14 to 19 May this year.
Free-from growth
Cristian Sala, Sales Executive Manager at CAMA Group has identified a growth in ‘free from’ offerings within the bakery sector. “We are seeing gluten-free products in particular being a reason for new entrants into the bakery market, with producers looking to gain share in this sector,” he says. “In general, the sector is continuing to promote more healthy offerings, with low sugar or fat content, for example.”

In terms of some of the most challenging packaging requests CAMA has received from its bakery customers, Cristian says: “While we do receive many requests to provide automated packaging solutions for some innovative packaging designs, which are normally hand packed first, these projects are covered by confidentiality agreements limiting my ability to tell you about them. However, I can say that for every project we are included in we will support the customer with our knowledge and experience. “The challenges that we have been asked to handle can be summarised in macro categories – there is a need to handle a high number of products per minute and to deliver customised and innovative packing solutions that originate from the minds of our customers’ marketing departments. There is also often a need to provide a packaging solution that fits into the existing production environment, with space and layout limitations.” CAMA’s range of secondary
packaging equipment is
designed to work with paper-based sleeves, cartons and cases designed to protect the product in transit and to ensure that it arrives at the retailer outlet in good condition. “This is a pre- requisite for delicate bakery products, even before shelf-life concerns are addressed,’ says Cristian. “Our solutions can also have a role to play in helping bakery manufacturers achieve their plastic reduction targets and to make efficiency gains. In addition, the wide range of shelf-ready packaging covered by CAMAs machine range provides a one-stop solution for bakery products shelf ready packing needs.” CAMA has, for example, developed its own robotic packaging system to allow it to meet the growing requirement for more flexible packing configurations with fast and automated changeovers.
